Having been 'brainwashed' for so long about 'animal fat is bad' it does feel strange, but hey, we'll give it a go.

Scary isn't it - and you're quite right, it's because we've been brainwashed to believe that fat is the issue.

  • And it's the food companies that are behind the brainwashing. That's the worst part!

Fredsnail, the older people in the care home will have grown up used to the idea of eating at a table rather than sitting in armchairs. It was common for a 'best room' to be kept with armchairs and you didn't eat there - the crumbs and the mess!! Eating in an armchair has only become common practice since TV - people don't want to miss their favourite TV programme and that is where that idea comes from. Food manufacturers capitalise on that by putting a lot of ads in the breaks so, you're sitting there, you get a reminder to 'eat something'!

I said to the owner when he told us that it was probably sitting at the table was associated with them eating - he seemed surprised at the suggestion but agreed.

Many of the residents have breakfast in bed - but Grandad always refused it because he wanted to sit at the table and the home were very accomodating and arranged it and also found a couple of other residents who would get up at a similar time and sit with him so he wasn't breakfasting alone.

Fred - I find it difficult to eat a meal if I'm not sat at the table, it just doesn't feel right. As a child my family all sat round the table together to eat meals and DH and I did the same with our children. My daughter is now continuing the tradition with our granddaughter, so it's definitely habitforming.

It is - we always had meals at the table while growing up and I much prefer it to having a tray on my knee.

    Hi All,
Just back from hols and not had chance to catch up properly yet. Just popped in to report and unbievable 10lb gain :eek::eek::eek: That's what 2 weeks all inclusive can do.

Think I ate quite well - lots of fish and salad, etc, so I am thinking that the wine and bread I had with each meal might be the problem - oh and the fact that every meal was 3 courses :o

Never mind, holiday was great - loved Madeira and sun shone everyday. I have climbed so many hills some of the weight might be due to my massive thigh muscles - :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Hello to any newbies - will catch up with thread later when more time.

Good luck with weigh in everyone.

STS today, same as last week and the week before. At least I'm back in the 67s and not in the 68s.

I can't really resist the lovely GI bread we can get locally, but I plan to have only one slice per day maximum. This morning DH cooked scrambled eggs with chives - lovely. He'd heard someone say: add a spoonful of creme fraiche to it and it really was lovely. Cooked in butter, of course, so that was enough fat for the morning! I had one slice of GI bread.

Fredsnail, we may be leading a revolution - back to eating at a table! Actually it is much, much more civilised. I remember years ago when my first husband and I got a bit involved for a short while with fostering troubled teenagers (if you want to tear your hair out by the roots that's the way to do it!) and a social worker joining us for an evening meal. He was fascinated by the way the 4 of us sat at table and argued and discussed, ideas flying back and forth across the scrubbed wooden board. That was in the 70s and he said then 'you never see that now, these kids aren't used to it', meaning the foster-kids. Well, ours certainly were and so are my grandkids. Come to think of it, that's the way my DH's 2 kids and 2 stepkids grew up and his eldest son and family do the same. We've sat at their table and enjoyed a meal and had the same kind of animated discussions - they're the 2 girls at Repton, and they've had very little time for TV watching in their young lives what with extra activities like music, swimming, cadets, you name it.

    Afternoon

I didn't weigh in this morning as I spent the morning following DD1 around many clothes shops to find some stuff for when she goes in to yr12 in September. This was good exercise in itself though not the most exciting way to keep fit:eek:.

I will weigh in tomorrow before my swim and fess up then.

Of all the slimming clubs, Slimming World was far and away my favourite, esp green days (the carby days) but I finally gave up on them as, due to all the 'oodles and lashings' of free food I wasn't learning to curb my appetite and regulate my eating.
I realised I could only teach myself this and that is what I'm now trying to do.

The number of times I had a bowl of noodles before bed because it was 'free' with DH saying to me 'why are you eating that?' and me saying 'because it's free'. Deary me. And I was paying!!

Anyway, well done to the losers this week and keep going to everybody else.

    Afternoon all.

I've thoroughly enjoyed reading the discussions going on here over the past few days. Would have loved to have got involved, but the most I can manage is a brief skim through, then I'm off again usually.

I've sat here nodding in agreement with a lot of what has been said. I agree the Slimming World out of all the diet plans, does have the best principles for healthy eating, by promoting cooking from scratch, wholewheat foods, and learning to control your portions. What it does do for those who are very big, who have developed big appetites, is let them not feel hungry, whilst beginning to lose weight on a regular basis. Once the weight reduces, they can become more active, and as their weight goes down, they can then learn portion control too. I think the main reason a lot of diets can fail after a week or so (or even a couple of days) can be hunger, and feeling deprived. I know Weight Watchers have altered their plan to try to make it more like SW. That said, I still wouldn't touch any of their products with a barge pole, as they're full of sugar, and starchy fillers, that have no nutritional value whatsoever. They have their place for those that like to count calories, and like to add it up through the day.

I grew up in a house where the family only sat down together on a Sunday. The other days of the week I got my own meals, and would sit at the breakfast bar, or could sit with it on my lap. Since I have had my children I have insisted on us sitting down together for meals. They're only allowed to eat sat at the table. Mealtimes are structured at set times, so that everyone knows when to be home to eat. It made life much easier once the boys were going out to play with friends. Lunchtime is 12pm, and our evening meal is always at 6pm. If they're not going to be home, they have to call me an hour beforehand, so that I know not to cook for them, as I try to plan the meals. With 4 children, wasting food was not something I was keen to do. My husband never liked to eat with us, but my partner now has always really liked it, and thinks it's a lovely time for us to all sit down and chat about our day.

I forgot to weigh in this morning, but when I hopped on last w/end I weighed the same as the week before, so I'll call it a STS for this week please Fred.

Lolly - I hope you're feeling better soon. Sounds like you've been having a bit of a time of things lately. Take care.

Beanie - still losing! How are you feeling now, any better?

Well done Lois, you deserve SOTW for that!

  • Evening everyone :D

Well this week has seen some very interesting reading, I have not had time to see this programme you are talking about but if the weather is going to be as bad as they say I might have chance tomorrow. I have to say in my past I did Atkins which is basically no carbs, lots of protein and animal fats and yes I lost a little weight at 1st. As I went on I found that my energy levels reduced and eventually you get bored of eating the same old thing a lot of the time. So to add my 2p worth .............
Everyone is an individual and what works for some will not work for others you have to make your decisions, only you know your body and how it feels.

Ok I am reporting another STS this week, took until friday before my ribs stopped hurting and I could attempt any exercise. So I must admit to a little comfort eating too. I'm still uncomfortable but getting back into exercise again but managed to over do it yesterday :(

Fred - Thank you for your nice comments in one of your prev posts it reminded me of my accomplishment :T I think maybe I should take a leaf out of your book and up my calories a little and see what happens as I don't seem to be able to go down at the moment!

Can I also add 45km walking , 90 mins surfing, 60 mins swimming and 9.6km running to the challenge this week.

Beanie - Hope your feeling better and thanks for your well wishes too

Lois - wow that is some loss but I wouldn't like the detox headaches myself, been there done that

Margaret - I agree about the eating at the table and I think I need to make an effort to do this again, I always did as a child and it was a way for the family to discuss the day etc.

Sary - Nice to see you pop in again :D Hope work is keeping you busy?

Lolly - Hope you got that pain behind your eye checked out by now? If not please have a sight test done to make sure it is nothing serious (please please please)
