I currently use Duck Duck Go mainly due to privacy concerns with google but was wondering which you guys used and if you had any concerns about privacy issues with some providers.

  • I use Google. It works. I get the results that I need. I can also search News results, Images, Maps, etc unlike with DuckDuckGo.

I don't care if Google sees what I search for. What is it going to do? Make adverts more relevant to my needs? OH NO!!! :P

    Google here.
I search for random things most of the time so good luck to them trying to pin down my preferences.

Actually you can search News results, Images, Maps, etc through Duck Duck Go. I used to use Scroogle but that breaks occasionally because of google.

I'd rather not have any advertising at all or a profile built about me. Thats why I use firefox with various addons for privacy.

Three guesses which one I use.

What do you see as the 'privacy issues'?
  • IxQuick is better than Duck Duck Go.

Google logs what you search for and that data is for sale. Its quite interesting to see just how much Google do know about a person.

This isw a tougue in cheek way of explaining it: http://donttrack.us/

Plus once the profile is built on you your search results are biased (tainted by your profile). For example my profile will be different from yours. If we were to search for the same thing our search results would be different. This explains it: http://dontbubble.us/

A less simplified version curtsey of notmyrealname: https://www.ixquick.com/eng/protect-privacy.html

Happy to be corrected, but I don't think that's the case.

Google can say to advertising companies "We can target your adverts to this specific set of people who search for x, y, and z", and use that information to do so. But they don't sell the information to 3rd parties.

They may make available stats like "70% of searches for Hello Kitty came from Japan", but nothing that could tie it down to a person.
