The main point you highlighted is that the app will not run on a non stock device minimising risk and that can only be a good thing.0 -

I like all companies who like to look after their customers not blame them for the problem. If Android or Widnows Phone followed the same steps I will use that as a main device. You can understand if problem is caused because of jailbreak (iPhone) or rooted (Android) os, this is your choice you dont have to do either. Wrong to make a point to say jailbreak / rooted os is safe and than blame the user if somthing go wrong because of it.
The google is correct in response to the problem with the Google Wallet in the USA, it knows it can be hacked easy and already working on the changes to make it safe. its impossible to release any proudct with 100% safety.
Unfortunately for your point Apple have a very nasty and very real habit of blaming their customers for their short comings until they are forced to admit the truth, as was the case with the antenna issue, exploding batteries, macs setting themselves on fire, etc.
They also don't work pro-actively as you seem to think they do. They only react to issues generally once there is a scandal as in the tracking data thing last year and the recent issue with the contacts on users phones.0 -
Good chioce of linux BTW, I've LMDE XFCE on my laptop.
I'm just overly security concious, and whilst I'm sure its safe I don't want the extra hassle if I lost my phone or it was stolen. Google Wallets problems just reinforce my view on this. I refuse to use NFC on a card or phone for this reason.
The app seems 'safer' than logging in the usual way, just quickly enter the 5 digit self created code and you are in, (I will have to try it over wifi) it seems it is tied to the device, whilst pin sentry is good, I know several of my colleagues pin number (not that I would use their pin or card) and I'm sure in time there will be stories of skimming NFC devices or contactless .
I suppose someone may create a way of sending a dubious text that may direct a reply via pingit, but since the pin has to be input, that perhaps closes that loophole already.0 -
Yes I think it is a good thing, the less apps work with the non-stock OS the better. This will reduce the risk mainly when doing banking, facebook etc. The stock OS is checked and tested so you have less chance of being done by. Both Google and Apple should be discouraging its users to take that path. The main point you highlighted is that the app will not run on a non stock device minimising risk and that can only be a good thing.
You will think this is ant-android but I will make the point.
If Android phone manufactures as well as Goole reduce the time between the updates will help and most users will stick with the stock OS. Some updates to the new version of OS for already released phones can take six months or over, so some people use non-stock route to update the OS. Another problem is you can buy new released phone but may have the OS which is 1 or 2 version down and no update available so again some people find other ways to update. The Google with the phone manufactures should be focused to improve on this. Once most users stick to stock os safety will come. The Windows Phone might also fall into this trap if not careful.0 -
This post is not about Apple Vs Google both are good at what they do. Say what you like I think for now Apple is more pro-actively than Google with Android or its manufactures when it come to phones. With Apple updats are quick, work with current models at the day of release, no long waiting between models and when somthing go wrong it take the action. This many change later but for now 100% Apple is more pro-active than others.Unfortunately for your point Apple have a very nasty and very real habit of blaming their customers for their short comings until they are forced to admit the truth, as was the case with the antenna issue, exploding batteries, macs setting themselves on fire, etc.

It is normal (right or wrong) any company let it be Google, MS, Apple will try to walk away from the problem if it can until many report them, look at the car companies. All companies are out to make money, non are public service.0 -

You have to remember you cannot voice for MOST users, manufacturers operate on a continuous improvement policy, after all why do tomorrow what you can do today?
If Apple choose to of annual updates that is up to them, there are keen users that want technology benefits NOW, and besides there is no obligation to have the latest edition, people are using android 2 quite content without needing to install android meringue :cool:0 -

Which contradicts your ramblings in post #25, they update annually and as you mention current models only, so the iphone 3 cannot take advantage of some iOS features.0 -
I think you have missed the point. If phone do not have the front camera than no update is going to put the front camera, even the rooted rom will not be able to do that. Yes the main update is once a year but over a year many times iOS is updated to either add some functions or improve safety. If Android can release main update every three mnoths than thats fine but current models or relased within a year or two should be able to update to that version which will have better safety and reduce the option to go for rooted version. The older phones may not be able to take the advantage of all functions.Which contradicts your ramblings in post #25, they update annually and as you mention current models only, so the iphone 3 cannot take advantage of some iOS features.0 -

Google are not Apple. Android is not iOS.
Google work on Android and release it to the public and various manufacturers. It is then upto the manufacturers which version they use, if they will update the OS etc etc. Google provide the OS and thats it (though this might change with their recent aquisition)the manufacturers do what they want with it. It is not the sme business model as Apple, and never will be. Most users do stick with the stock OS.
There is also a flaw in your other point. The stock OS in apple is checked by a small group of people at apple. Android once released is checked by 100s of people across the world. Which is safer???thegoodman wrote: »This post is not about Apple Vs Google both are good at what they do. The above of course is just your opinion.0 -

It is no different then is it?
The handset is the hardware and no software is going to change that only adapt or enhance the hardware features, earlyy iphones cannot run facetime, just as say a a HTC Hero will not benefit from an NFC software update. The non Apple devices adopt some or all features of the OS it is not obligatory to adopt them all, many users will never use the features or have a desire to.0
