Barbeduk meant say - I have yet to try Aldi/lidl. Essentially I am lazy so i tend to stick to usual supermarket as easier. However , Aldi is near me at work so I might give it a go. Any tips anyone & can I really majority of my shop there ? If it saves me some ££ it's worth a try. Or might be a sat pm (visit day) job ...... :T

    Hi there :)
That's really helpful thanks for that - I think I will just have to go & have a wander at the weekend when I am not pressed for time.
Progress is slow but still plodding along .... Just get a little downhearted sometimes when I see 2 rds of salary gone on mort/loan before I even start !!!
Never mind , good start with ebay so far which will give me a little extra this month :j

I get the majority of my shop at a1di and pick up a few bits that they don't do in one of the big4. I save ££££££ this way.

    I always buy:-

    Broccoli
    raisins
    Weetabix (or rather their equivalent)
In fact all cereals are good
    Potatoes
    Sweetcorn
    Tinned toms
    Frozen salmon fillets
    Yogurts, milk, creme fraiche
Their mince is nice so is the chicken breast
Frozen pizzas oven chips all good
    Quilted loo roll
    Kitchen roll
    Wipes
Washing powder, both bio and non-bio
    Surface spray
    washing up liquid
    wholetail scampi
    cheddar
    goats cheese

Loads more but can't think at the mo. Best to meal plan for the week and go in with a list. It will be trial and error at first until you find out the things you like.

What i like about them is that i can get round them, pay, pack up and out again in about 20 minutes.

    Definitely worth a visit.

I buy all sorts of stuff there but sometimes thay don't have something you want.

As already pointed out, the mince is good as are the free range eggs. I also tend to buy some of the more specialist cooking ingredients that tend to be really expensive in the major supermarkets.

    Stuff like anchovies and spices.

What started me going to Aldi was the BBC Good Food magazine.

They regularly do comparisons and Aldi often come out top or near top on blind tastings.

Their Mayo was last one I remember reading about recently. Their brand is Bramwells and I like their Mayo, tomato ketchup, Horseradish and mustard.

Their salad creme is OK but I prefer Heinz :rotfl:

Another thing I buy are the small packs of cubed pancheta for cooking, they are a lot less than the same thing from Tesco, another tip from the Good Food magazine.

Their jars of olives are fantastic!

Their chocolate is great too. They do an Aero type that is nice as is their milk, plain and Swiss. The memsahib buys their chocolate for cooking and baking as well as scoffing. :D

You need to go and look but be warned, it's very easy to get carried away! On my first trip I ended up with a trolley full of bargains, most of which were fantastic but that I didn't really need. :o

One thing to be aware of though is their policy to stock only the stuff that sells in that area. There are several near me and a couple are very basic with not a lot of choice, I wanted some fresh ginger and they didn't have it, there is also a big one that stocks more stuff including ginger.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.
