I think Tesco have to accept some responsibilty as they have gone into the arrangement with their eyes wide open knowing that they were exploiting people. I think its absolutley disgraceful I really do.0

well you need someone to be doing that checking
so that would generate a cost to workfare
all these people doing workfare will have no extra money to put into the economy.
So Tesco get free workers (if theres work for these people to do,why not employ them?)
it requires more Government expenditure to run the system/checks
with no gains in the economy
given growth is required to create jobs
how does this help?0 -

Workfare already has a cost, unless the companies using Workfare are paying the government for the privilege (correct me if they are). Any job which can be taken by a permanent or salaried member of staff, but which is taken by someone doing Workfare, is not going to put more money into the economy: salaried staff do, via taxation and the extra revenue other companies get via those workers' disposable incomes. How does Workfare provide growth, unless it artificially lowers the price of goods and services because their runmeration is so low? (Do you see any savings passed on to you in this regard?) It is better for the economy to have minimum wage staff than Workfare staff.
Any scheme like this should be carefully and rigorously scrutinized, to ensure that it does not incentivise employers to take Workfare takers over salaried staff. In my opinion, where it is practised, these positions should be short-term, and subsidised by the employer in part (£65 for a full time working week is a pittance, multi-million pound companies can afford that).0 -
There's an e-petition for anyone wanting to help make there voice heard about this scheme. Currently 6200 signatures in 5 days.
http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/29356Petition to Abolish Work for your Benefit/Workfare Schemes in the UK
Responsible department: Department for Work and Pensions
We want to abolish work for your benefit/workfare schemes in the UK.
People selling their labour should be fairly remunerated for their work at the normal level paid for the tasks they perform and treated in the same way as a standard employee with full rights and representation if requested.
These are the basic rights of any worker in a modern democratic society.
Workfare is effectively forced labour and is therefore illegal in the UK.0 -
Now the hapless and cluesless idiot Grayling has called those of us criticising such exploitative schemes "jobs snobs":

Tesco react to public pressure -Supermarket group Tesco said it has asked DWP officials to make the work experience scheme voluntary after thousands of angry customers wrote in and posted messages on Twitter and the company's Facebook site accusing the multinational of profiting from hundreds of thousands of hours of forced unpaid work

This con-dem govt are really plumbing new lows. I well recall Thatchers strategy and onslaught against the socially oppressed back in the '80s, but even she has nothing on this bunch. Thatcher recognised that some folks needed IB and were unable to work, this lot turn to sanction the very worst off in society who need support mechanisms simply to exist.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
