Because vax sits in DT to do nothing other than make pointless rants about stuff the gubbermint is doing. There are plenty of threads in there about it. This has nothing to do with the title of the forum.

What are you dribbling on about? It's got everything to do with the title of the forum.

I'd be happy to travel from Ipswich to Bury two nights a week provided Tesco are willing to pay me the going rate as well as them or the gubbermint (sic) paying my train and bus fares which would be about £24 in total. Yeah sure my Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit will need to be reduced according to what monetary gain I'd be making. I'm content with that. But Tesco won't be. All they want is wage slaves with the gubbermint(sic) picking up the tab.

Of course, I could go on - but there be moderators....;)

I saw a job advertised on direct gov and it was a work placement but it was on the jobsite. It said something like expenses paid only. Thought that was truly awful.

Oh, this is nothing new (although, strangely, cannot find an example in 15 mile radius serach at the moment.....); I am determined to take someone to task over this and have -
Spoken to a jobsworth on the JCP National number - he was definitely toeing the party line and kept saying that they ARE jobs and talking right over me.....so.....
    Jobseeker Direct - don't know, will call me back (O-Kaaaay) - haven't....so....
My local JCP (via the national number) - tried a different approach and was called back by the person who co-ordinates it for "this" area; I kept my mouth shut about the immorality of these "jobs" with zero pay and she asked if I wanted to offer some feedback (yeah right) to "whoever runs the website". She looked into it and called me back directing me to the *DWP website which SHOULD give details of the Contractor responsible for the [STRIKE]utter mess [/STRIKE] website - but I was somewhat distracted by the number of tenders that are submitted for these various departments. It's laughable.
The only evidence there is that all these services are "offered" is the number of staff in the JCP - which "you mustn't come to between 12 and 2) and the fact that such "services" are used to label, categorise and terrorise "the unemployed" (for whatever reason they may be...)!

    Ugh - must stop ranting.

  • In my opinion unemployed people should be doing something-paid work to support themselves. In the absence of this I think a few hours charity work is not unreasonable as it gets people out of the house, provides training and qualificions, lunch and bus fare.Plus you are giving something back to the community, chatting to different people and not having the heating on all day at home.
There is a big difference to doing a bit of volunteering to having to work full time at a supermarket for your JSA. What happened to the NMW?,Tesco can afford to pay it.Are we devoid of all rights because we are unemployed?

No, no and nope, I have volunteered for 18 months before getting my current job (that doesn't even pay anything near enough to cover my rent, council tax, heating and food, btw) and I never received training, gained any extra qualifications above the excellent ones I already have, nor gave me a free lunch. Please, where are these free lunches?

    no great shock
Royal Mail are jumping on it too, with union backing.........
  • I get a free lunch upto the value of a £5.00 where I volunteer. Bus fare is also reinbursed.
I received training and will get a qualification which can go with my others. I guess it depends on the organization you volunteer with.

I recently looked into volunteering at a wildlife reserve about 10 miles away. They are actively encouraging people to apply...

When we spoke on the phone, I thought I would grasp the nettle and mention that I would hope travel "costs" (literally, I don't want to make a profit) would be covered should I go above one day a week. I had thought two as that gives some sense and consistency... she then said that "Oh, we find one day a month suits most people" huh?
I will not beg for money - it should be stated outright without the need to clarify.
Ditto with "real" jobs; I once travelled to London on the train (£75.00 plus tube) for an interview with a well-known global wildlife charity. They never mentioned travel costs - shame on them*. I didn't ask either as it should not be necessary. Again, I refer back to my time with huge US company - whenever interviewees were coming, they were booked into an hotel, taxi-ed to and from the factory, paid mileage costs and air fare in some cases and of course fed well and handheld throughout their visit. This was organised and paid for in advance - yep, that would be my job.

    :)

*British Airways on the other hand, paid me twice over for driving down to their HO.
