Kind of defeats the object somewhat! What's the point of a contraceptive that kills your sex-drive??
Depends why you are on it. I'm on depo because I don't want to spend a couple of days a month off work, in pain, throwing up.

I tried two different contraceptive pills, neither stopped my periods, but depo did.
  • Used the combined pill for several years but then started getting lots of headaches so was advised to stop it, tried the mirena coil but I had constant nagging pain with stabbing pain when moving, tried depo injection but apparently it turned me into the she !!!!! from hell ( husbands description!!) when he had to remove a knife from me in the kitchen, neither of us like condoms so tried a diaphragm, it was easy to fit and suited us for the short period before husband had then snip!
Covering it with spermicidal gel and lying on the bathroom floor to insert it did mean the conversation happened before the bedroom though :o

Not for everyone. I had mine inserted with no anesthetic and clamps were involved  Wasn't painful, uncomfortable yes - but not painful and I have a seriously low pain threshold!

    Different strokes for different folks.

Did you have the clamps used because your cervix is tilted? I was told that because my cervix is tilted that if i had the mirena coil fitted (because of heavy periods), that clamps may have to be used and its scared me off having it done!

We used a diaphragm with no problems - you are measured, the pharmacist orders it, and you usually have to go and have a check to make sure you have managed to work it out right!

I've been told that coils are painful to have inserted if you haven't had children - I have a mirena but it was put in under a general anaesthetic as part of some ongoing treatment so don't know whether that is true or not. Two weeks in I would cheerfully have removed the thing myself if it had just been a contraceptive... After 10 weeks it has settled down - I get some cramps, spotting and it looks like so far I'm still getting periods.

I haven't had children but found it easy when I had mine put in, it was less painful than the smear I'd had a couple of weeks before.

They didn't use clamps though (as far as I know, and I'm assuming I would know!), she just used a speculum and put it in, pulled the wires to open it and snipped the wires short.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

While I'm all for educating people and letting know all the options available what really annoys me is medical professionals who try to pedal certain contraceptives to women who have told them that it's an option that they don't want, and doctors who don't point out all the most serious common side effects, especially with forms of contraception that either can't be reversed or take time or a medical procedure to reverse/remove.

Also the fact that people often try to make out that certain types of contraception are better than others based on personal experience (I'm not saying that about anyone here), what I mean to point out is that all women's bodies are different, and especially in the case of hormonal treatments everyone reacts differently.
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

Ive also heard far too many horror stories about the depo which is why Ive always chosen the pill over it.

As for coils and the implant – really don’t fancy them! Plus I have heard that they can stop your period or give you irregular ones.

I think Im definitely going to go for the diaphragm and get back in touch with my body and have regular periods again – as I mentioned before, I’ve been on the pill for 15 years so its about time I stopped pumping it full of chemicals!

I have a tilted cervix, off to one side and upwards to the back. I didn't need any clamps but it was done by a very good gynae at the hospital. My GP made one feeble attempt to remove it when it needed changing before declaring it impossible for her to do, the gynae did it in a few mins with no probs. If you do want one ask your GP to refer you to the hospital for the fitting, it's soo much easier.

I used a diaphagm many moons ago (dunno if they have changed any in that time). I took one look it in the carry case and said 'that thing will never fit inside me' but it did and i hated it. Imagine having to stop and gauge if your other half wants sex or just a cuddle and say 'hang on a bit ive got to fit me diagraphm' what a turn off! I tried wearing it every time we went to bed just in case but it gave me thrush.

I was never very keen on the idea of the coil.... i'm not anti abortion (i wouldnt have one though) but i just didnt fancy the idea of the sperm and egg meeting in the first place.

It gave me thrush too, and it took a while to find a spermicide that didn't irritate me.

Also, sorry to be crude :o, but your OH getting his face covered in spermicide during the premable is gross. Obvioulsy you may not partake in such activities so it may not bother you, but it certainly did me.

  • Depo injection made me gain weight badly, I ended up with polycystic ovaries and fertility issues where I had none before but whether that's down to the injection or the weight gain it caused is anyone's guess.

I worked in a GUM clinic temporarily and saw coils being fitted, that put me off. Then I worked in an early pregnancy unit and saw woman coming in for early pregnancy scans, (one with TWINS) that still had the coil in and that put me off a bit too!

Diaphragm sounds good but I don't like the thought of getting thrush.
