Your problem will not be solved by fitting more RAM. You would be far better posting a HJT log on here - speed up sticky step 1.

As has been suggested, post the hijackthis log, physical ram total, and commit charge before spending money, XP with 1GB should boot in 30-45 seconds

    Dear Rob

I have tried my best to ease you gently in to the knowledge that this laptop has only one slot.
But you seem intent on shooting yourself in the foot. If you insist.

Either way, it seems that if the OP is running XP the problem lies elsewhere. Fitting more RAM may be superfluous.

if you have already posted a thread asking for help, please do (Press CTRL ALT DEL, task manager, performance), note and post the commit charge total , commit charge peak, and physical memory total figures, along with a hijackthis log

commit charge is found using task manager as explained in the instructions, ctrl alt del

uninstall rapport, ie new window maximiser, anything google related, TamilCube

try it with the free version of avast instead of kaspersky, you can always go back to kaspersky later if it doesn't solve anything.

stop cyberlink software running at startup, using msconfig, startup tab

    commit charge total
    commit charge peak

and physical memory total (which won't change so only needs posting once)

    are the 3 important figures.
