Thank you for Monevator
My October holiday is coming up and I have promised myself I would be a bit more financially focused then as I have a fixed term bond maturing and will need to find a new home for the money. The reviews for smarter investing look good, but the price is quite ouch. I do have a kindle, so must check the kindle price.

Is it replicable? I ask as a couple of the reviews seem to suggest the author only just managed his goal and is bragging about it a bit too soon...

You're very welcome Prudent. The Hale book is definitely worth the spend, but it might be worth seeing whether the new version is reduced when it comes out? The wisdom imparted in the book is fairly timeless, so I can't see what they will change in the grand scheme of things. Then again, the last 5 years have been extraordinary in the world of finance :eek:0 -
Think I might put that Hale book on my Christmas wish list - I keep reading about investing, but, I'll be honest, I find it a bit confusing and very daunting

Edinburger et al.....you maybe interested in this book as well, also on Kindle and just price dropped. I read a sample for free and bought the book yesterday and already fascinating. Comes at investing / money from a different angle. I stumbled across it looking for books on simplicity and alternative lifestyles to the work-spend cycle. I am a few chapters in a so far an intriguing read.

I'm a huge fan of ERE (the concept, although Mrs E would never let me get away with it!) I bought the book last September (at full price ) and most of it is a very good read.
The basic takeaways (i.e. insourcing and simplifying, cutting expenses and creating perpetuities to sustain your now-reduced expenses are all sound). Where I didn't enjoy it so much was where he rattles on about some sort of Emmersonian ideal of a new renaissance man (that, and the absence of strategy beyond 'spend less').
The financial landscape is very different in the UK (housing and tax spring to mind).
Spent some time with one of my younger brothers this afternoon. He has recently graduated, is looking for a job and was feeling a bit down in the dumps. So this afternoon I'm feeling grateful - being confused about jobs is so much easier when you have one!- £1 to Freedom Fund

I may have missed this, so I apologise if I have, but what's your Freedom Fund about?Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Hi Mr E, apologies for stalking you this evening.
I really wish I had been clued up about spending twenty years ago. The knowledge that you guys share on here is extremely welcome, so a big thank you. You're not just touching us, but in my case, my kids as well. What a gift to be able to help and inspire.
