Well done on the productive day... did you get to the cinema or is that for later/another day?

We went yesterday. Iron Man 3 is rubbish.

Trying desperately to get the taste of chili truffles out of my mouth - received as a gift - what the hell were those chocolatiers thinking? Actually feel physically sick
Do you have any left? I have a strong stomach :rotfl:.

What a horrible day at work - it feels like I'm umpiring a school bully contest at times - or maybe keeping the peace

£13.57 paid into Zopa today (I seem to have acquired some rapid return loans for the first time ever, which messed up my neat tenners). These are partial loans that have been sold by another lender and typically have a higher rate than is currently offered. So good, but everything will look a bit askew for a day or two.

I have finally been able to print off a return for a suit that didn't fit, so I will return that tomorrow morning before work. The £50 will be well received, although I imagine postage will set me back at least £6-7.

I am not looking forward to tomorrow - our bi-monthly board meeting.

Hope everyone else has a less stressful working week ahead of them
  • Edinburgher - i subscribe to your thread and popped in once before but couldnt help but add in my experience about teaching

It may not be a welcome thought but there is a serious shortage of teaching jobs in primarys in the central belt. Im more towards glasgow so it might be better nearer you but graduated nearly 2 years ago and had a lot of trouble finding work. You get the first year but after that it can be difficult and i know a lot of people from my course who have left to go abroad and have a friend who has been out for 6 years who still doesnt have a permanant contract.

Im not trying to put you of because i love my job but had to just add that in. You sound like your pretty clued up on money and probably knew this already but i would hate to keep reading on and see you say you wish someone had mentioned it earlier. One last thing, a lot of my friends have some work but dont have a contract so you might be ok with that it just doesnt give much security.

I feel like thats all very doom and gloom sorry if it sounds quite negitive i really do love my job but it really scared me when i had no work at all in august. I think your local school will be glad to have you and if there not you can come to my school!

Thanks for popping in and there's never any need to apologise for honesty :)

I am actually in Glasgow, but joined the boards when I lived in Edinburgh back in the day, hence the nickname.

I also have a friend who really struggled to find a (secondary) post and took a couple of years to do so. It's not a great situation, but the sector where I already have skills (libraries) is even worse. I have always worked in specialist libraries, and the number of posts that come up in Scotland each year for these can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

Teaching doesn't look as bad as that, and I'm open to moving elsewhere in the country if it comes to it. Also probably in my favour is the fact that I've already been working for over a decade - I have something to fall back on. But yes, I feel terrible for new graduates with no real experience who fall straight into un/under employment.

£6.45 into Zopa today, that should tidy up my balance. I've picked up another rapid return loan today (for some ridiculous figure like £6.82), so even numbers are not yet in sight :D

Still, I've been well behaved and have paid in £150 in less than a fortnight. I don't even feel that skint!

Performance Board finished, that's me 'free' for another 2 months.

Just wanted to make sure you knew. There are jobs out there the key word is permanant. It is a good job hard work but worth it. That said its parents night next week so i might not feel the same way after that :rotfl:

What of peers who went further afield - have they had better luck?

I ask as my wife and I went to London after our postgrad course, found work within 6 months. People who graduated with us have *still* never had a job in the field, because they stayed in Glasgow (6? years later)

Extreme examples, and I know teaching is different in Scotland and England, but there do seem to be permanent posts about, just not in the main central belt locations.

Finally managed to return my suit today, nearly £9 for postage  I miss standard parcels...

Today has been a NSD, with £10 paid into Zopa.

Looking forward to a glass of wine and Game of Thrones this evening, dinner will be something quick and healthy.

I feel like a total zombie today... having one very stressful week of work each month followed by downtime is a strange way to live.

Yesterday wasn't a NSD after all - apparently 1/2 price crisps and chocolate still have a cost :rotfl: Dinner was quick and healthy, although there's no point if I just eat rubbish afterwards.

£10 into Zopa this morning, today will need to be an *actual* NSD!

I will phone Scottish Power this evening, and am already mourning the £700 we have to pay. Thankfully Mrs E gets paid in a week, but it will drop us below the £3k required to get 3% on our current account for a few days.

It has come to my attention how little OPing I record in this diary, possibly because we're the worst MFWers ever? :o

Just to motivate myself (and partially because I don't want everyone to think I'm a total fizzle), we have managed some different goals over the last year:

    £2,500 into emergency fund
    £976 into S&S ISA
    £500 OPed
    £160 into Zopa

I have to be honest, I am wondering whether the money spent on driving lessons to date wouldn't have accomplished more in support of these other goals....
