Hey Ed,
Sorry to bother you again, but you do have a slow cooker don't you? I want to buy some, but need some advice. I just posted on the SC thread, but think you may be able to help. Here's what I said:
Hi all!
I want a slow cooker cos you guys seem to think they are the best thing since sliced br...sorry, a breadmaker and I can really see my using one. I indulged in a MR 6L one just before Christmas as it was a bargainous £24.95 but it's round, and I've realised that's not the best shape for joints/chickens and I would struggle to fit one in width wise, despite the depth. I wanted it for cooking spag bol etc for myself as well as joints (I live alone, but would be happy to bulk cook), but I'm getting the impression from what I've read of this thread that I might be being a bit ambitous with one that size.
Please help! What size should I get? Should I forget the idea of being able to do joints etc in one as well as cooking things like spag bol as it will be just too big, or is there a good compromise size? My kitchen is only small and there's no way I could have a big one for joints and a little one for everything else, hence trying to get as many functions out of one as possible.
Your advice is most welcome!
Given that I live on my pickley lonesome and would like to do joints as well as soups etc, what would you recommend?

I've got a 3.5 litre oval slow cooker. This is a good size as you can do joints as well as curry, spag bol etc. There are only 2 of us but I find this size slow cooker ideal to make at least 4-6 portions - so one meal on the day plus 2 meals to go in the freezer.

Pickle, I agree completely with Denise. We have a 3.5l oval cooker (think it's an Argos own brand?) It's ideal for about 4 outsized portions/6 normal ones.
My only regret is not splashing for one with a timer - untimed is fine for most things - but if you're doing a fancy meal (i.e. stuff needs browned before going in etc.) it's not always practical to do it before leaving in the morning.0 -
Thanks for the advice Denise and Ed. I've had a look online and I've found the MR smaller version of the one I've got on special offer for £19.99 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Morphy-Richards-48710-Cooker-Stainless/dp/B0000C6XOJ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356558848&sr=8-1) but then I saw this as well, which is a little larger than you guys recommed (http://direct.asda.com/Breville-VTP105-Slow-Cooker/001562265,default,pd.html). Whaddya think?! My inherant :money: thinks the second cos it's bigger and that means better value for money, but I don't want to regret getting it too big (or small!) and it also means one less sale for Amazon, who don't pay their taxes!

I've got the Morphy Richards one, it's great. I think it was a Which best buy and it gets great reviews. Don't get the 6l version, apparently the element gets to hot and over cooks things.I'm a qualified accountant but please make sure you get expert advice as any opinion is made in a private capacity.

They both look good. Tbh, I doubt any major company pays more tax than they need to. The main problem for me in that whole sorry saga is the fact that UK tax law is so byzantine that you need a wheelbarrow to borrow the statutes from the library!
I am absolutely furious today. Remember how I mentioned that my phone was stolen when we went out on the 23rd? Went to find my cherished 5 year old iPod to start the Couch to 5k podcasts and it has also been lifted. A gift from Mrs E
All in, going out for my wife's best friend's birthday has now cost me about £165

It is not my day! Mrs E has gone to work (she's in today and tomorrow) and has taken both sets of keys :rotfl:
I guess I'm not starting Couch to 5k today no matter what I do!
*Edit: It was going to cost £60 to replace my old iPod, despite it being 3rd? generation. I guess it goes to show how reliable it was? In the end I used a few small Amazon credits to get the new Nano for £98 (delivered free tomorrow with a trial of Prime, Nectar points, Clubcard points and some pennies stoozed). Also bought a gel skin, screen protector and arm band from eBay as cheap as I could. That's £106 gone and I am feeling skint :mad:0 -
You have been so good at saving into the OP Pot and EF though:T
I'll have to get back into my couch to 5K (I do enjoy the 'couch' part of the regime:p)

Hi edinburgher, been reading for a long time but never posted so hello :rotfl:
Regards to a timer do you mean one that you can set to start at 9am after you put the meat in that had been browned at night? If so can't you just get a normal timer that you plug the plug into and set that? Then you can set you S/C on high/med and away it will cook
Like these although you maybe able to get them cheaper elewhere. Just an idea
Have a great new year :T0
