I am with SD on the brewing. Our kitchen was 16 degrees last winter and wine still fermented out.0

My main concern at this point is fluctuating temperatures introducing taints/off flavours to the beer. As the room is relatively cold, followed by 3 cycles of warmth from the central heating, I think this is a real concern. In any case, the yeast seems to be dropping out nicely, there's a gentle foam on top of the beer (as opposed to the gross collection of liver coloured slime yesterday) and it's started to clear already0

Im sure it will be yummy. Watch out for the alcohol content. Ours is megamolar. Not to be taken on an empty stomach!!0

musings on this, having down the same... it is a far dirtier job than you can possibly imagine. Buy as much of the best quality insulation you can humanly fit into the voids. Your attic space, when you're in it, will be come hotter than you imagine possible (especially if you are stupid enough to undertake the project on a sunny day). B&Q seem to go through phases of having multi buy offers on their insulation material in the spring. May be worth signing up to the mailing list for the heads up?

That's a really good idea Pavlov's, thanks
We have 2 options for the insulation - 1) pay someone to do it or 2) DIY. Because our home is relatively old, we think we can go through a government energy assessment scheme if we go through 1) and bring the cost down to around the same level as 2) (minus the filth and hard work!)
Unfortunately, both options have a dependency, as the factor appears to have done sweet FA as regards getting quotes for roof tile repairs... I have chased them several times, but it is getting old and we're not affected nearly as much as others in the building.
Went to L1dl and Asd@ today, deals are now thin on the ground, guess I'll need to wait until the 2nd!- Bought 2014 Christmas pudding for £1.50!

B and Q frequently have really major savings on loft insulation intermittently, when we did ours it was a bargainous £3 a roll, have a large loft and quite a large car and did 2 runs in the end with a boot full but the savings we made was fantastic. We just masked and gloved up (long sleeves etc as well as scratchy / nasty) and did ourselves. Using a saw to cut through when necessary. Was a nasty job though.Morgage till Nov 30 GOAL MFW Sept 2016Aug 11 - £100k Aug 2016.... It's GONE!!!!!

Mrs E and I went to the library together and then went for lunch in Clarkston (a posh suburb in the South of Glasgow).
We spoke about houses, fixer-uppers and the trades you'd need to be willing to make to live in a fancy area on young people salaries.
I think we're in agreement that we like nice areas (well duh!), but more importantly I think we realise that you do it for the relaxed atmosphere, good schools etc. and that lifestyle inflation would need to avoided like the plague! :eek:0 -

Love the term "lifestyle inflation" Suspect I've had a bit of that over the recent years. Getting back on the straight and narrow now hopefullyHadn't come across it before - but - yep lifestyle inflation. Very apt !
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!0 -
It's not a phrase I coined, I used to read quite a few American personal finance blogs, it's a phrase that's probably understood better on the other side of the pond
Had a lovely Hogmany breakfast out with Mrs E at a local caf!, sometimes local really is best. Nicer food than yesterday, portions double the size, free paper to read, friendly staff, no rush and cheaper (even with a tip).
Off to the cinema to watch something silly shortly, our local 0deon does cheap(er) tickets on a Tuesday.- £5.40 to Freedom Fund
- £10 to Remortgage Pot
- £8 to Home Improvement Pot
Happy Hogmany to all :beer:0
