Maybe the captain's accomplishments could be winning a blue in a horse show, i.e all the hacking and his misadventures leading up to "the big day" and maybe having been in shows with another horse who is the antagonist of the story.

When I was wee used to love reading the saddle club series of books, a great group of friends, maybe you could something similar but based on a group of riders and also the group of horses so 2 different sides. So you could have a day where say they all went for a hack, riders tell one side of the story, their day and the horses tell another side, so give a bit of humour???

I've had a quiet day at work and came across your diary, Piquant. Have to say that I've had to stifle some laughter quite a few times (the llama story nearly did for me), but I do like your style. I can sympathise with the Captain stories - I've had dogs all my life, including 3 Danes, and when my children were young we were given 2 ponies. Cue exceptionally steep learning curve for me, with a lot of help from my friend who owned a livery yard. Anyway, at one point we had 4 ponies, including a totally bonkers miniature Shetland that liked to ride in the Landrover. A tale for another time. I currently have a very grown up (but soft) long-haired GSD, and an Italian Spinone who my friends liken to the Village Idiot. Oh and an exceptionally beautiful and snooty Maine Coone girl called Annie.

What I would say re your book thoughts though, is that your humour is very appealing to adults. Children may smile at it, but some of it might be lost on a childish mind. I would maybe go for something more like Marley and Me, or Beethoven type story, that would appeal to adults as they will recognise the pain of a wilful animal that drives you crackers yet makes you laugh.

I have to applaud your moneysaving though. You are a great example to us all!

    Morning!

It is the dullest of dull days, pouring with rain, the Bear has got wet whilst doing his ablutions and is whinging incessantly and trying to sit on my lap to be petted and reassured that he will survive. He always wants to sit on me if he's wet, not sure why, but it's not a pleasant experience! Wet cat - yuk

I'm awake now, stiff as a board around my shoulders and neck, taken something for it, so it will ease off shortly.

There are some brilliant ideas on here. I'm copying them all up into a document to work with later. I'm thinking now of going down the route of the story of the Captain and I. How I'd lost my nerve, due to an accident riding, and he was a complete *rse, not a marriage made in heaven. I think it might have some appeal to anyone trying to deal with fear. For me a lot of the problem was trying to do what absolutely anyone would suggest even though I was crippled with fear. Naturally, this made things far worse, especially the Captain who knew I was afraid and was helping in his own way by refusing to move! Peer pressure leads you down a road you don't want to be on. It's hard to get off, as for a while you don't want to admit you can't do what others think you ought to.

Even now some days for no accountable reason I feel nervous. If that's the case, I don't ride. Simple. It took so long to learn this though...

Hello Caroline :hello:and thank you for your lovely comments. As you know the Captain's true love is a Shetland, not that she loves him. He will happily jump anything to be with her and have his knees bitten. I didn't know what an Italian Spinone was :o and had to look it up. Gorgeous!!

Needless to say, I achieved very little yesterday as my brain had temporarily burned out. That was me flattering myself with a brain! I did apply for a restaurant review freelance job, but I haven't heard anything back. It was a paid per review job. I imagine they were inundated with applicants.

Today I must catch up. I'm in all day waiting for another courier to collect my large e*bay sale. Meaning I have time to do a lot of admin and writing....

It's so boring waiting, luckily I've got myself set up with the laptop in the kitchen [it's at the front of the house] I'm afraid to even go to the toilet in case I miss the knock at the door and find the 'we called but you weren't in' card. Or even worse, they don't knock and just disappear.

How are you NL? Will be popping over to see your thread in while.
