I forgot to add - I made £246 on eb*y and have withdrawn the money. I have a non-payer of £36 too  Why bid if you don't intend paying?

All this money in means I have made ends meet this month after the unexpected expense of new tyres, insurance not paying out and mistakes in my pay. Phew....

I will try it on the bathroom window, a very cold room! I'll buy some when I'm in town tomorrow. Thank you!

I remember visiting a lot of student digs where people had done this because the landlords didn't want to put double glazing in.

Also make draught excluders out of old tights an put them along any window edges.

I had to give in and put the heating on for Monday as I was really ill, hate doing it. The flat wasn't cold but it just wasn't quite warm enough to help me get better, between that and lots of hot water bottles I was like a new woman on Tuesday and well enough to come to work yesterday.

I hope you're feeling fully fit soon.

Thanks missrir, I will look into all of this later this morning.

I was supposed to have cavity wall insulation installed [do you install it?] but my walls are too damaged to do this. The rendering is coming off. I have quotes to remove rendering and re-render coming in at the £3k mark - unfortunately, not possible at the moment.

I'm not sure about fiddling with the radiators, there's only one room that's not in use and it is one of the rooms without double glazing, so I might turn that one off. I've heard that bubble wrap over the window helps, but I'm not sure if you stick it directly on the glass or leave a gap, as in double glazing.

You are welcome yes they install it as they physically put it in the walls. Rendering makes naff all difference to cavity wall insulation. Have you had someone else say this is a bit dodgy like a proper builder? Apart from the fact they may not be able to make it look nice when they have finished as they drill through this and into the wall and fill the gap. If the rendering is a bit dodgy big chunks could fall off and if course then they would not be wanted to repair, but i am sure if you explained this and said you would waiver the damage to the rendering ONLY as you know it is blown and will come off then should be fine, go give a different company a shout see what they say.

Look at the prep for winter thread on the old style board, stick bubble wrap straight to glass but method of sticking can vary in outcome. Some say masking tape others sticky tape.

Cavity wall insulation - our local council had a scheme running and providing you met certain requirement then the stuff was done for free - the only bit our our house that qualified ( ie had cavity wall - most of our house has 3ft thick stone walls) was dodgy 1970's cowboy built double story extension that previous owners had built on back - took a bit of persuading the company doing it cos they where going on square m - but OH managed to tell them it fitted the bill and we had it done - took about an hour and no cost to us - they filled in the holes after - they also put in ventilation cos we have solid fuel CH. But our horrible pebble dash render is not in great nick and that didnt bother them. Made a heck of a difference too - had to dispense with duvet and buy a very light summer weight one!

Might be worth a call to council

I will have to contact the council regarding the cavity wall insulation as they own the piece of land to the side of me and many years ago planted pyracantha along my outside wall. They maintain it at about 6 foot but it will have to be trimmed down to about 4 bricks high to put in the insulation. Whilst they're at it I'll ask them to cut back the trees that overhang into my garden.

The fun will be had trying to track down the right department....

I'm sure I read somewhere that certain companies are paying you to install. There seems to be a fair bit of research to be done.
