Busy day. I collected my tablets, I take thyroxine and always leave it until I've run out before I reorder them:o So had to run down to the surgery to pick them up.

On the way back home, I picked up the Bear's milk churn. It's planted up with dark red and silver heurchera, dianthus and white winter pansies. Underneath are white daffodils, Queen of the Night tulips, deep red/purple alliums, white hyacynths and snowdrops. I painted his silvery stone with his name and that's now resting against the milk churn, it looks lovely.

I also planted up bulbs all round the beds and have put a deep red clematis to wind around the white rose arbour I've put him in. When I have a little more cash I will get some solar fairy lights to wind through so he won't be alone in the dark.

Played with the Captain whilst re-affirming pecking order. I pay the bills - I'm in charge! I think he enjoyed himself winding in and out of cones and playing football with me!

Now I'm considering housework, considering, mind, not actually doing....

  • The Bear's special resting place sounds absolutely gorgeous. With great sadness, I have arranged for the vet to come and put catto to sleep on Thursday - he is now very thin indeed, and I don't want him to get weak and wobbly, as he is already very clingy, and today I thought he looked a bit anxious. He is still purring, but I need to feel I am getting the timing right - better a day too early than one too late. So, I too, will soon be choosing plants to remember him by: I am rather thinking of a quince tree, to join the apple tree we planted in memory of my horse.... how I wish animals lived longer! It's all so poignant.

Oh cake, poor you, poor catto. I'm so sorry. It's such a hard and heartbreaking thing to have to do. We love them so much, it's so hard to let them go, even when it's the right thing to do. The Bear was very clingy too, but he had lost his purr. I was afraid he'd forget me and be alone and afraid in his head, but, I, like you, found it so difficult to say goodbye.

I will be thinking of you and catto.

...and lastly, Colin ate my Basil plant in the kitchen, all that's left are little stalks. He's fine and smells fantastic!

my cat Ted used to eat ferns in plant pots, his mother taught him how to do it when he was a kitten.
I'm so glad that Colin has settled in so well with you.
  • The Cake - Sorry to hear about Catto, thinking of you, it's awful having to make the decision. I lost Katy recently in Aug and still at a bit of a loss without her, I still keep expecting to see her in the room or conservatory.

Piq - the fairy lights is a good idea, I might do that for Katy. When I get in from work at 7.45pm I put my bike away and the shed is next to her little grave, I always stand a few mins looking at it :), but its dark now and the lights would be a nice idea.

RIP much loved cats, Katy and the Bear. xxxxx
Thanks all so much for kind words and thoughts ... catto was very bright this morning, so I have postponed the appointment for the time being. He is certainly keeping me on my toes! I had a long chat to a very sweet vet, told him how catto is at the moment, and he said it was fine to keep him going, and that I would know when the right time came. My OH (very supportive and sympathetic) also thought I was being a bit premature, tho' he didn't say so until I had reached today's decision. I hate having the power of life and death over another living being, it feels like such a heavy responsibility.
Anyway, catto is still purry (tho' not very furry) and lives to light another day. Love to you all, xxx the cake.
