I have applied online for JSA. The form said it would take an hour to complete, I did it in 15 minutes, I hope I haven't done it incorrectly. I chose the online option as it saves one trip to the job centre. I now have to wait for someone to call me to set up an appointment.

I feel quite despondent. I know it is the right thing to do and all that, but I feel a level of failure. No matter how many jobs I apply for, I rarely get a response.

Still, onwards and upwards...A cup of coffee and I'm going to start writing my first assignment, all notes are ready. All I have to do is put the first word on the virtual piece of blank paper.

Well done, it is a big step.

Frustratingly, your first appointment will be to go through it all again to verify the information :(

The first assignment, how exciting :D Do you have a subject to write about?

No!! Surely not? Someone has just called to make me an appointment, first thing Friday morning, and already gone through the form with me. Unfortunately, she talked to me as if I were a moron, but she was pleased that I had managed to fill it in and not miss any bits of information out. Do they not have morons with the odd flash of genius from time to time then?

I have to write about something that interests me and might interest my reader. It's supposed to be a place of historical interest, a sporting event, a local market or some such place. However, being broke at the moment, I don't want to pay for travel or entrance fees.

I live in a tiny village nobody has ever heard of and at the end of last week there was a house fire. The whole village came out to watch the firemen, police and ambulances (nobody was hurt, just a serious case of hysterics). I thought I'd write about that. I was particularly taken with how the ladies in lycra and tracksuits would breath in as the firemen passed....

It was an event, people were milling around for hours, gossiping, passing round cups of tea and oohing and ahhing over the damage. I doubt that the Diamond jubilee party will get such camaraderie!

I'm hoping I won't get thrown off the course for taking a slightly off-beat event, but I think I can describe the atmosphere and excitement, and that is what has been asked for. What do you think?

All chins in place and not wobbling!

And I've written the first draft, will go back to review it shortly after another cup of coffee and a washing check.

That sounds like a great story. Please can I be your proof reader? ;)

I think we are going to fight over being your proof reader, I think that is a great tale to start with!

Job Centres - Not only do they not know how to deal with the general public capable of filling in their own details correctly they don't seem capable of employing staff with much about them either. For those of us with a brain that we want to use the fortnightly visit to the job centre really is enough of an incentive to find yourself employment - especially as they won't be able to as they only get jobs via them for real numpties.

I don't mind doing a numpty job if they pay well....I'm dreaming again, aren't I?

I'd happily do a simple job if it was local and gave me time to write and ride. I've had enough of the high powered boardroom politics, long hours and no friends. To be honest, I took the higher salary for granted. You only have to see my debts to realise that!

I'm absolutely dreading Friday, I'll be crying on your shoulder Maty, probably with frustration and I may need you to help me bury the body....or will that be bodies?

No fighting over proof-reading, now I've started the assignment, I'm filled with self doubt! Has the man pet wasted his money? No need to all kick me at once, I've finished the first bit and am well into the second!

Think I may write up another Captain story to keep me sane, it also serves a dual purpose of giving me the starter intro to a chapter of his book.

Thank you, I was a bit worried it didn't fit the brief, but now I've re-read it, it is clearly an event that is required, this will do.

If I ever get as far as being published I promise you a copy!
