Can someone explain the point of dressage please? Very skilful and pretty, especially the extended trot (em possibly that is what it's called - stretchy pointy leg bit) but I think there should be a point to sport and can't really see when dressage would come in handy? (Don't take it personally folks, I'm the same with the gymnastics and a bit on the fence with polevaulting and triple jump. And unless you're trying to persuade a shark it has double vision, synchronised diving & swimming seem a bit odd as well :D).

Having said that, still cheering them, hopefully on to victory united-kingdom-flag-waving-smile-animated.gif

Anyone that can persuade a quarter-ton of insanity, barely controlled behind those lovely flick-y ears to dance deserves a medal in my opinion :rotfl:

lol gallygirl. its true what is the point of most sports? as a rider it takes extreme discipline and training to get a horse to perform at that level and not all horses have the right temperament. The fine tuning at that level is incredible. And then it just becomes the same as any other sport I suppose - to see if you are better than anyone else. and we got GOLD :j:j:j:j

I do enjoy dressage (at a much much lower level) but my horse just gets wired up and to be honest some of the horses at that high level do make me feel a bit awkward as some of them look really uncomfortable with their heads cranked in but to some it just comes naturally. :D

I too have watched some of the other sports on the olympics and thought ' why on earth would you want do that?' like the pole vaulting - why would you want to launch yourself into the air on a pole lol. did you see the poor british girl last night she didnt make it - I just wanted to cry for her.

I am sure Piq, Baldybear and Noonar (sorry cant remember who else is horsey) will come along with perfect explanations of the point of dressage ! :D

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:I can't see the point of most sport either! Quite taken with the idea of synchronized swimming and diving with a shark in the pool though....would add an exciting edge to it...

Love the stretchy pointy leg bit description, if only the Captain and I could do it - sigh....He feels that the only way forward if you're in a show arena is to charge round as fast as your hairy legs will take you, pausing only to gurn at the spectators. He is a huge show-off and loves being the centre of attention, but on his terms, none of this fancy dancing stuff for him....

We entered a veteran competition last year. The Captain was the oldest in his class and the only one that could barely walk.... rather than walk he was trying to gallop round doing motor-cycle bends on the corners with me madly grinning pretending I was in control. He was doing the head cranked in bit, because I was holding all the power in with a death grip  and under the breath threats....

He actually got placed second, only because the judges were so in awe of his personality. I was told we could go far if I could contain his exuberance...

No dearest one, not from me, I'm not sure of the point of dressage either any more than I see the point of the pole vaulting or darts, come to that...

Sorry guys I can't help you with dressage either - too controlled for my liking! Although I see how much training and effort they put in. Same for gymnastics, my youngest is a regional gymnast and even the hours she puts in a week is phenomenal, I love watching the gymnastics!

An interesting day today, well, at least for me.

I've been mulling an idea for setting something up with a view to working for myself for a couple of weeks and haven't been sure how to progress it or even if it was a viable idea. Over the weekend I was talking to a couple of friends and mentioned this vague idea to them and we got talking. The result of which was that we spent the afternoon brainstorming it. One of them has the ability and knowledge to set it up, I have the ability to market it and the other friend has the operational knowledge to run it. It's still not clear how the money comes out the other end or if we could afford to set it up but we're going to pursue it a little further.

I've got all the notes here to sort out and type up. I get to do all of this as it was my idea! lucky me...what became apparent was that if it worked it would be huge, scarily so. I still need to clarify a few of the objectives and other bits, so lots of work for something that may not come to anything.

When I got round to opening my email, there are two contacts with two different job roles. Now I need to get my cv sorted twice and a hundred and one questions answered by tomorrow morning. Late night I think.

Signing on day tomorrow - deep joy. I've printed off my list of jobs applied for, still refusing to use the silly booklet they provide. Much better done electronically, particularly as I have to provide the same details to the insurance people.

Once done there it's off to earn an honest days banana!

The Bear is still sticking close to me, still very needy, but doesn't seem unwell.

The Captain was pristine clean, I think the torrential rain gave him the bath of a lifetime! He probably though I'd arranged it as he was a bit sulky until an apple materialised.

Off to interfere in your diaries...

Dressage, the reason they have flat stomachs. It exercises your core HARD! It originated on the battlefield when positioning of your weapon versus the opponent was of course life saving and you were clearly mounted. Similarly the ability to stop start change direction and slow up, speed up to avoid bring skewered was needed.
I work for someone who has represented GB in senior dressage except at Olympics , it's about taking natural ability and making it precise. Not easy at all.

Carp day here and time for bed, do fancy banana cake though!

Now that is impressive missir, I didn't know that. I knew that I mounted from the left so my sword wouldn't get caught up and embarrass me.

In some cases taking natural ability is all you can do :D
