"All my worldly goods with thee I share.." I think is the apposite phrase.
I hate to see a married couple bickering over pennies, counting everything put in and resenting everything spent. In my experience, they are the couples who break up. Everything is a competition."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0 -
In fact, know what to do: ask her and see what she thinks. That'll be the right answer ...

Its both of yours, you should decide together to spend or save it in a way that benefits your whole family.
If that's not immediately obvious I feel a bit sorry for your wife and kids.0 -
I've just reread the op again. So yeah you do have kids and you admittedly earn a great deal more than your wife who presumably has sacraficed career to look after the little uns. And you're seriously asking if who this cash belongs to! It belongs to your family, who else would it belong to. Bung it into the pot and have a chat about what you both intend to do with it!

Does no one read full posts? OP has said it's just a bit of friendly banter.
I would say technically, it's your money. Your setup is that you pay expenses, she cares for the children. This is an overpayment of expenses, you've covered your part of the deal and this is just a return on that. If your mortgage had been £3500 lower over a set period, what would you have done with the spare money? It would have been in your pocket, so that's where the refund should go.
However, in practice, chances are you would have had a spare £20 here or there and spent it on the kids or family stuff and not had that money to hand now. I say the best solution is to put it in a family pot that you use for a holiday, stuff for the kids etc. - your Mrs. can't really argue with taking money away from the kids, you look generous, and you save having to foot the bill for the holiday from your own bank account so you can treat yourself to something nice from that instead

LOL,
Well good debate then! Maybe Martin should use this for the poll of the day!
Either way the money will probably be spent on the kids anyway. (Well if I get it that is!)
Thanks for the opinions!0 -
It's yours BUT your wife should give you a bill for the childminding she does whilst you are at work, ditto housekeeping etc that amounts to half the money. Would you consider that fair?
