whose money is it?

Hi All,

I recently got a mortgage chq for £3500 due to over payments. Now I work full time and earn quite a bit more than the missus who works part time.

I pay all the house bills, childrens bills and holidyas etc. She gets to keep all her money for herself. I have no problem with this arrangement.

Now she says because the mortgage is in joint names she should have half. I say I made the payments so its all mine.

Now I'm not looking at the legal side etc just the moral side.

Whose Is It?

Ps. We are on good terms about it just a friendly discussion!

  • ten times out of ten it is yours!
  • In my opinion, it's your money. You overpaid and this is the reimbursement for that overpayment so it's yours.

What's yours is hers, what's hers is her own.:D

    Hope that is clear!

I say it's both of your money, seeing as you're living together and in a relationship.

Surely you'd want to share it with her?

If she does not pay for anything then I'd suggest it was yours to do what you want. But a windfall like that my OH would probably put it towards something for the both of us.

My OH recently got a £800 cheque from the HMRC. After discussion he used some of it to buy tablet PC and the rest went into our joint savings.
  • if it was the other way round would she give you half? I suspect not. you paid the money, she didn't. you got the cheque, she didn't. legally and morally it's yours!
  • Whilst you were earning this money, did she do any childcare for your kids, cook your dinners, clean your house yada yada yada?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • In our house I do the full time job and pay everything for the house. If something like this comes up I tend to put it in the family savings for a holiday or for something we need for the house. Without OH looking after the children I wouldn't be able to do my job, so wouldn't be paying all the bills or earning all the money.

But he would be the first to tell me to have a bit of it for myself and get something that I want :)
This time I haven't smoked since 6th Jan 2014 and still going ok.
    Fingers crossed x
  • Is the mortgage in both your names? Yes, then it's half hers!

Bear in mind that if you took this to court, say in a divorce situation (might not be far off if you decide not to share! ;) )your wife's input to the home and raising any kids would be considered to be of just as much value as any financial input you made!

I'm really shocked that some people really you should keep it! Why not overpay btw?

She is at home with the children so it makes no difference if you are paying all the bills, it should be spent in the interests of the FAMILY.

I would be really upset if my DH thought all the money was his just because I can't go out and earn as much as him.
