MERGED: Changing Suppliers

  • I do hope this isn't a really really stupid question. About 6-8 weeks ago I used MSE's links to a comparison website (can't remember which one) to discover that I'd be better off changing my dual fuel supplier to British Gas from Southern Electricity. I took the necessary steps to start the rather slow process of doing so, and in the meantime MSE started to say that now was the time to fix your tariff if you hadn't already done this. I rang British Gas to ask if I could fix my tariff and was told that I couldn't until I'd actually transferred. Everything is set up for me to transfer in the next couple of weeks with the DDs ready to go. Am I now going to be caught with higher prices because I couldn't fix my tariff at the necessary time? Is there anything I can do?

    Hi all,

I am moving into my first home next friday, and i am wondering what i have to do with regard to current energy suppliers?

I know who the suppliers currently are at the property i am buying, so do i need to ring them to register my details with them?

I am pretty sure i will be changing suppliers after looking at Uswitch, so do i still need to register with the current suppliers before i can change over?

    Thanks in advance

Read your meters as soon as you move in and then contact the Utility company with those readings and tell them you are the new occupant.

You will be on a 'deemed contract' initially with that supplier - which will normally be their most expensive Standard tariff(but with no lock-in clause).

Then make you mind up which company you want to move to(if at all) the move takes up to 6/7 weeks. If you decide to stay with the present company, on a cheaper tariff, they will normally backdate to the day you moved in(if you don't leave it too long).

    P.S.
    Read water meter as well
  • I've just moved in to a new house (well, a couple of weeks ago) and haven't much of a clue about switching because this is my first move away from home!
I've always snooped on here for grocery deals and freebies but decided to join because I'm a bit lost now!

I'm currently with NPower but have had my mum, dad etc telling me to switch in order to get the best deals.

On here it suggests going through a compare website rather than straight to the energy companies.

Are their any compare websites which I should avoid?

I've also heard negatives about switching, so when you switch it's cheaper but then further down the line, the prices are hiked and you end up worse off.
Are there any energy companies which really aren't worth switching to?

Sorry to bombard my post full of questions, as I've said I'm new to having to fend for myself!

    Many thanks in advance :)
