Will have to look into that but I'm pretty sure I'd still be better off.

Anyone know off hand what benefit you get for paying direct debit for British Gas and Electric?

(save me going and routing through my bill file which is upstairs lol

Paying by DD you get 10% discount on gas, and 4.5% discount on electricity.

If paying by cash/cheque then you can get a prompt payment discounts (if paid within 10 days) set at 7.5% of the bill up to a maximum of £2.38 per quarter (exc. VAT), £2.50 (inc. VAT).

Yes you will. They work as separate companies.
  • Hi, after watchin martin's programme I think it would be a good idea to switch gas and elec supplier. The website energyhelpline.com asks for my currnt usage. I have read somewhere for the most accurate estimate i should complete the KWh per year box. How do i find this out? Do i have to look at all my bills for the past 12 months. Can't seem to see it on my scottish power bill.

    Appreciate any help

    Mrs Dunbar,

I wouldn't guess a KWH per year figure would be on any bill, I would just add together the number of units charged on a year's worth of bills. And this should be the most accurate figure you have remembered rightly. I hope you find a cheaper supplier!
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
  • Hi. Am new user and couldn't find my question, so here it is again. Think I've found a new cheaper supplier but do I need to contact current supplier to inform them of switch?

No, you just contact the new supplier or select the new supplier via the comparison site and then they do all the work for you.

Some of the lower tariffs are only available if you switch via a comparison site.

I apologise if this q is elsewhere but am gnu here. I couldn't find out anything about consumption in this flat - because of the Data Protection Act they wouldn't tell me a thing about the previous occupant, including their utilities usage. They gave me their tariffs and after bill no 1, I have switched to London Energy Duel Fuel (prices held until Jan 07) from British Gas. Br Gas has just announced a 22% price hike from 1 March. Why does it take so long (in my case 2 months) to switch supplier? Is there any way of speeding it up?
