No, that's the usual time frame for the switch, however once the switch is initiated you usually remain on your current providers tariff without the increase, until the switch to the new provider.

I'm about to move into a rental property and the current supplier is British Gas for both the gas and electricity. My question is, if I change the suppliers before I move in, will BG charge me a penalty fee for switching, even though I've personally never used them...? If I wait, move in and then change suppliers, presumably they will they make me pay this when I do change, but it doesn't seem right that they would charge me for changing even though I'm not with them now. (My current supplier at my current address is not British Gas).

    Can anyone help...?:o

As British gas is the current supplier at the new address you will have to remain with them for 28 days, you can action the switch as soon as you can, you won't be charged for switching away from British Gas, you will have to pay however for the 28 days or more you are with them, only once have I seen someone manage to move straight into another property and somehow manage to get a new supplier take over from move in.

Thank you so much for that... Brilliant!
  • Hi, at long last I have looked into changing suppliers for Gas and electricity from Scottish Gas. I used the Uswitch site for comparisions and EDF Energy have quoted an annual saving of over £300 :j which seems rather too good to be true! I had a look at their customer satisfaction stats and they seem not too bad - a few disasters but I'm sure all suppliers have these.

For interest, I went on to the EDF Energy site to obtain a quote; advised annual saving for just over £100.

I just wondered if anyone had any experience of transferring to EDF and then the prices shooting up and the anticipated savings not really being accurate.

    Many thanks

    Mist

If you join EDF via their site, you are on a higher tariff, to get the lower tariff you need to go via a comparison website.

I've never liked uSwitch, never list all the suppliers, and often slow to update the prices when it means a supplier who doesn't give them a high enough kick back comes to the top.

uSwitch are running a new promo where anyone who switches gas and electric suppliers will get a £20 Love2Shop voucher. The voucher is like a high street version of a book token and can be spent in almost any high street retailer, have a look at the Love2Shop website for more info...

When looking at the table for Energy Comparison Services (via the advance results analysis & details link), why does it ask if Equigas & Equipower are included ? Is there something special about that company ? Is it considered reliable ? I can't find anything on the MSE website.
    Thanks.

I believe it's because they don't offer the comparison sites a kickback, so some like uScam try and hide them. It is these kickbacks that make the sites their money, when you advertise on TV you are going to need to ensure people switch to a providers that offers the comparison site the most in kickbacks.

  • At present we have Gas & Electricity from British Gas and am considering changing.

However to due to estimated bills for the last year and British Gas failing to set up direct debits we have a debt of £170 for the gas but a £210.03 credit on our electricity bill (for which we had the cheque for last week!)

So the situation is that whilst we could change our electricity supplier now we couldn't with the gas as there is now way we could pay £170.

Is it better to wait so that we can change the gas and electricity over at the same time or should I look into changing the electricity now and the gas later on (am expecting gas usage to fall as we only use this for heating)

Also we have British Gas cover for our boiler - would it be possible to keep this with British Gas or would we have to look elsewhere for cover?

Hi there..Due to Rules and regs suppliers are not allowed to do anything with a credit on an account unless the customer requests it. Dont blame BG for the 170 outstanding balance on your accounts, you get a 3 monthly statement, it's upto you to look at them, they review your accounts once every 6 months, however a quick call or email to them would have had someone happy to look at this for you.

The heating cover is the best in the industry, not the cheapest but they provide level 15 gas corgi reg engineers which is the highest you can get, you have ALL parts, labour included even if you call on Xmas day, and you get a free service every year, and you have a dedicated 24 hr call line for emergencies. If you leave BG you can still keep ya cover, but we have a Fix and fall promo at the moment, have a look at https://www.house.co.uk and see, but shop around you will find based over the year it usual works out the same..depending on how you pay etc..
Hey folks...remember I might work for the company but I am a human and working in my own time, I will not responde to people who are rude, sarcy and crits me. My views and comments do not reflect British Gas and they are totally unreasponsable for my responses.
