What is the point of wedding favours?

We had wedding favours.
We donated money to the British Heart Foundation who sent heart badges. My father died of a heart attack a few years previously so those that knew knew the reason behind it without it being too symbolic and the hearts were appropriate. It is lovely looking at the pictures with all the guests wearing the heart badge. Some still have them on their coat etc. I know I do.Overdraft = £1000 Emergency fund = £2500

This is similar to what we did and the guests LOVED it! We had a fishbowl of different sweets on each table (instead of flowers which just die so IMO are a waste of money) and the place names were on a pick and mix style bag.
We weren't expecting quite the excitement but all the guests were visiting each table to grab sweets and talking to each other. My DH's aunt wasn't impressed as she is a dental hygienist
The families always bring up what a great idea it was and it kept the kids entertained. I had DH's niece tell us it was the best wedding she had ever been to (she goes to quite a few as a Christian), and that was before the ceilidh.
Most of our guests have been gushing about the day for over a year now.
We didn't spend a fortune on our wedding but every penny spent really did help make the day. I am biased, but it was a really great fun day for all the guests - that was my priority after DH insisted we couldn't fly off and get married somewhere hot (and on our own).mountainofdebt wrote: »Not having a go (after all each to his own!) but seriously why?
These seem to be the latest must have as well and these I really don't get.
If that helps you "get it"

It's not sneering and most guest are too polite to say anything but you just sense that others are in the same boat as yourself thinking "why" and lets face it a wedding really displays the bride (and sometimes the groom:D) taste from the style of the frock, the colour of the flowers, and the theme (even if there isn't one) at the reception and no two people will have the same taste.dizziblonde wrote: »What is the point of going to a wedding if you're just stocking up on material to sneer at and mock for later use? Not really nice is it?
I have to say I have a chavvy side of the family and a posh side of the family - I think I am in the middle and weddings and even funerals are interesting. I enjoy them all in their own way but sometimes I think "why"!

There are plenty of things about weddings that women are apparently supposed to assimilate through hereditary knowledge. When I got married I had only ever been to a few weddings and they were as a child, and so I had no idea about the protocol. I was extremely surprised to find my mum getting upset about things like the wedding venue because I was supposed to know (for example) that the bride gets married from their home town. Well nobody bl00dy well told me that, and so I did my own thing.
Wedding favours - never heard of them and have never received one. But none of the guests at my very simple wedding moaned about not receiving cake, favours or whatever.0 -
I honestly think we fret too much over small details of our own weddings. Let's be honest- its only an important day for you and your immediate family. I can honestly say that I can barely remember details most of the weddings I've been too- beyond having a good day( most of the time!). Favours- if you want them then that's fine but if you worry over folks speaking about you because you didn't have any.... first of all the vast majority won't notice- and those who make snide comments about the lack of any are probably folks that really shouldn't have been invited in the first place. Your guests should really only be interested in seeing the happy couple and having a good time themselves.
I don't know about anyone else, but I have tended to keep favours for a short while and then bin them( I would bin them right away but I feel too guilty doing it!!)weight loss target 23lbs/49lb0 -
I always thought that a wedding favour was something the chief bridesmaid did for the best man. :rotfl:This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I wasn't too interested about favours for my wedding but everyone keeps saying how nice my home-made jam is. I thought it would be nice if I give each guests two small (1.5oz) jars of my home made Strawberry Jam and Crab Apple Jelly.
I think the favours are nice, can be eaten and didn't cost too much and it was fun to make them. The only think I don't like now about them is I can't be bothered to find an organza bag to put them in but I need to.0 -
I make my own soap and am having heart shaped handmade soap for favours - I thought they'd be useful but also pretty and would have something of our personality in them as h2b is helping wrap them and chose the scent.carpe diem

I don't mind if there are favours or not when I'm a guest, but I do quite like them when there are. Apart from the almonds thing as I don't like almonds, but it's usually a sweet little trinket or something nice to eat. Just steer clear of the stuff personalised with the wedding/couples details unless it's edible. No one wants a photo frame/whatever with other people's pictures/names on.
I also don't like bowls of sweets on the tables as every time I've seen that, every brat in the place comes round shoving their sticky fingers in and eating them off all the tables without even bothering to ask, so you don't get any unless you are willing to risk a side order of bogie and spit.
So if you are having a candy buffet keep the kids paws out of it.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
