What is the point of wedding favours?

I've only seen them at a couple of weddings and I noticed that quite a few people left them behind at the end. At one wedding the bridesmaid proudly announced that it had taken her several days to make the favours (she had sewn all the bags). Many of the guests, especially the men, had a 'what a ridiculous waste of time' look on their faces!0

The best ones we had were my brother's wedding, the girls got a lovely tealight and holder [decorated by the artist bride] and the boys all got a CD of the wedding music [all really good stuff, dreamy summery songs] and its probably the only time we have used them afterwards.
I remember first hearing about them and it was a bit like Kiki said 'eh, favours at a wedding? [the mind boggles]' and most of them have been either pointless or cheesy...unless they contained chocolate in which case they were munched on the way home.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. I wwas bridesmaid 28 years ago and there were favours. I was a guest at a wedding with my Grandparents 26 years ago and they have them too.
We had them at our wedding in 2010, which my cousin made for us as a gift which was lovely of her!
Ours were little pink drawstring bags, with retro sweets in them, which everyone loved, especially the older guests! They each had a little charm attatched to them (the bags, not each sweet!) with the word 'love' on it, and a little tag with our names and the date. I've still got one, which I've kept as a little momento.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
Favours are vitally important. You put your future mother in law in charge of making the favours, so that she doesn't have time to interfer in all the bits of the wedding which are important to the couple.0

I think they're an uneccessary expense really . DD had them at hers , sweets in an organza bag so not expensive , DS had none at his and they weren't missed . Didn't hear any comments at about favours at either event . At a wedding last year all adults got a miniature peach vodka which was nice but not expected . If you want favours , then have them , if not , don't worry !0

don't worry I'm 25 years married and had never heard or encountered of them then aside from the bog standard packet of matches which were put out for all the guests at weddings when I was younger and everyone smoked!I feel left out now
First favour was from my friend's wedding 19 years ago. They are now divorced and the favour is urmm "missing":rotfl:

I'd never really heard of them (other than the sugared almonds thing) until my friend got married last year. They gave everyone an envelope that had some seeds in, some were flowers and some were salad leaves I think. They were seeds inside little paper shapes that you planted rather than just loose in the envelope.
Quite a lot left theirs behind, we did plant ours but sadly nothing came up.0 -
Reading about sugared almonds reminds me of the story of the old man who had a home help.
Every week after she'd finished cleaning up and helping him out, he would give her a bag of almonds. After a few weeks, she said to him "You know, it's really nice of you to keep buying me these little bags of almonds but you really don't have to, it's my job to come and care for you", to which he replied "Yes, I know but the almonds get stuck under my false teeth after I've sucked the sugar off, so it's no bother"... ;D"If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0
