  • i complained to iceland head office about their tea bags...most of the tea bags, over several months, werent sealed proprly so all the tea fell out. i got a one pound voucher. it cost me more than that to send the tea bags to them.

my daughter complained to sainsburys about a 'thing' in the salad she got from the salad bar. it looked like a pebble and was incredibly hard, so she sent it to them. they said it wasnt a pebble but some sort of 'pip/stone' (dont think so sainsbury) BUT they sent her a £60 voucher!!! couldnt believe it.

Ooh it's like Donoghue v Stephenson (1932) One of the most wide reaching cases of our time. Though Mrs Donoghue got gastro enteritis from a decomposed snail in a bottle of ginger beer.

Seriously though? I think it is rather shocking, and you could probably hold out for more. I'm surprised people seem to think it's ok! It depends whether you want the fight.

Ah I remember that, my first tort essay was based in that! :D
    Put the kettle on. ;)

I recently found a small snail in a bag of frozen peas.
I contacted customer services by phone and they were very sympathetic and asked for all the info I could supply about the bag of peas in question.
They then credited me £10 for my inconvenience.
Is this a reasonable about of compensation or should I pursue it further?

£10 seems perfectly reasonable to me. How much do you expect to get if you pursue it?

I wouldn't persue this any further - it's reasonable and no harm is done to your health. Retailers and manufacturers will also share your information if you try this too often and it would eventually push up the price of the product to cover the claims. Obviously the product should be of a good standard but lets face it, it comes out of the ground so it's bound to get the odd bit of field thrown in with it!

You'd have to pay for escargot in a restaurant - you should be paying them.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

you can get thousands for this sort of stuff.

lts no different to the guys who had mices' heads in their snickers bars etc.

The other day I was eating my porridge when I crunched down on something hard. It turned out to be some kind of tiny mollusc. I threw it away (and the rest of my porridge) and got on with my day. I didn't suffer any kind of trauma requiring me to pursue a ridiculous claim for 'compo'. What a mentality we have in this country these days.

I would say that it is more than adequate :) It's a natural product with a naturally occurring foreign body in it...it's gonna happen from time to time :)

    Very well said!

I do think a tenner's okay. It more than pays for a replacement and for the inconvenience of having to make something else, doesn't it? I am assuming you ate the peas. I would have and I'm vegan! You can pick a snail out, it's not like e.coli contamination or something. And, unlike mice in bread and chocolate bars, it's expected that there are bugs in vegetables sometimes.
