LOL I have a bottle by my bed, one by the computer and a tube of cuticle cream in my work bag! I usually only remember when I'm sat in front the computer.

I'm so glad it's not just me :rotfl:

So Karma came and bit me at the weekend (see shameful posts 2023 and 2027)

My mother called, meaning she wanted something she hardly ever calls me. She could hear I was in the middle of something so she asked me what I was doing. As it happened I was trying out the paint on to plastic method link posted by Toomuchdebt. Thank you, it worked like a charm.

Ps. you don’t have to do the first layer of clear polish, it works just fine without and it stops you trying to hunt down the area after its dry (clear plastic sleeve + clear polish = invisible, drove me batty)

My mother suddenly went off into a rant about age appropriate hobbies and playing with nails are for 12 year olds she really got quite vicious about the whole thing. She then decided to put it all down to us being child free by choice and a symptom that we should have babies. Please note everything come down to this – the price of fish/global economy/bad weather is a sign that we should have babies :D

Being used to my mother I just rolled my eyes right up to the bit when she also mentioned I sucked at it anyway and so I best give it up before I made a fool out of myself. This did goad me to a seconds irritation because 1. She has never seen any of my painted nails 2. Reading between the lines she only wants me to stop because she feels it shows her nails up (she has always bitten her nails and very very badly)

During this rant about regressing to childhood and not being normal.... part of me was laughing my butt off as in the living room my 30yr old OH was building a 4fft rollercoaster out of k’nex – the box stated for 9yrs upwards. He was sat on the floor surrounded by parts and happier than a pig in pooh as he had always wanted one as a kid (he had a hard childhood) and we had seen it while out shopping that day.

So after using skills of many years of calm and not rising to my mother baiting. I apologised insincerely that I would be unable to help her mate (who she wanted to impress) out with an issue that relates to my line of work and hung up.

Admittedly I was not in the best frame of mind to then paint nails. However I did and it came out ok. I was observing to the OH I just couldn’t quite attain that perfect look I was after.

Now, ladies, if you live with a sciencey analytical geek you should never hint at a question as you WILL get an answer. I should mention here his response was typical of him and held no malice what so ever.

He rationally pointed out the look I was after would be unfeasible with my nails. He explained that for example the polished perfectionist/Starry Starry the nail lengths, shape and nail bed were all very symmetrical. Thus achieving a evenness and pleasing balance. He then referenced this with a study about symmetry and the beauty code. The noted though my nails were lovely they had all had a different shape nail bed and my thumb and middle fingers all have a distinct slope to their growth. When he looked up and saw my face he looked totally abashed

So thank you karma, got the message, loud and clear.

    :D

Oh my, that's a really sad tale. I had a lot of problems with my mother too, to say it was a love and hate relationship would be spot on. A good sense of humour and pragmatic mind definitely helps, but it shouldn't be like that. My mum ended up the most inappropriate person I have ever known and I died on a very regular basis. Funnily enough, I don't have children either...

My nails are a real hotch-potch, all different and all very small. My niece had larger hands than me when she was 10. That's the best thing about nail polish, you can rectify so many inconsistencies :)

I have some of those A4 document wallets for ring binders, I'm going to make a few nail stickers I think. I want to try a basecoat, then paint a design on it in acrylic paints. I'm useless at drawing (I can do stick men at a push) but it'll satisfy my curiosity as to whether it can be done.

Ok so I've been feeling a bit uncomfortable since reading this post this morning. While I'm flattered to be mentioned in the same sentence as the polished perfectionist I know for sure that I don't deserve to even be in the same paragraph. I'm an amateur. My nails are not perfect, they grow at odd angles if they get too long and they peel something terrible if I don't use Nailtiques. I really enjoy reading this thread and I've picked up loads of great tips and I love all the pics but the last thing I wanted to do was make anyone else feel unhappy with their own nails. I'm sorry if I have. I'm not going to post anymore pics. They'll be on my Flickr stream if anyone wants to look but I won't put them on here.

I've ummed and aahed about whether to post this but its been playing on my mind all day x

Agree, no-one to stop posting, love to see everone's efforts, even if they are things I wouldn't do myself. My own nails are awful at present, but they look half decent with a coat or two of polish, and seeing nice nails gives me something to aspire to.

OH watching footie, I am holed up in kitchen, trying to give cuticles a mega dose of tlc. All my stuff spread over the work surface etc.
