Just thought I would clarify something in this thread. Even if you are not entitled to JSA like in my case my partner earns over the amount for a couple you still have to participate in the work programme if you want you national insurance stamps, it is compulsory. So you could be with an employer basically working for nothing. Slavery has returned it seems.

Really. You are comparing a couple of weeks work experience to fill a gap, get a reference and possibly some new skills & an interview along with paid travel and your national insurance contributions paid so you can access healthcare etc. to the plight of slaves? Wow.

Exactly what skills can you learn from stacking shelves in Poundland? Perhaps useful for someone who has never worked before yes, but for someone who has been working all there lives, has various qualifications what will I learn?

I keep asking you this but no one replies, where are you going to be working for free?

What it does do is actually stop the creation of jobs, Why employ someone when you can get them for free on the work programme.
Are you serious? You think someone will work for free for ever if they are on the WP?

...one individual may not - but there may be a plentiful supply (admittedly with one arm forced behind their back).
    :(

    And - to saintjammyswine...
Yes, "slavery" is an emotive term - but it is also an elastic one and one that you may be in a position to sneer at the use of; someone on the receiving end of the push into the "wonderful" (unpaid-but-yay-you-will-get-a-reference/recent-experience-and-your-travel-expenses-covered-I]possibly[/I*) position will definitely see it rather different than you.

ETA - * and I forgot to mention that this work experience could of course equally be an "interview".

P---- taking all around (plus broad-sweeping generalisations - one size DOES NOT fit all!).

As I have said before, for many (obviously not you) simply being in a work environment with everything that entails is an alien world. It takes skills, mainly personal, to be able to do this and often people who have either not been in work or not for a long time need help with these skills. Poundland is one example and it is the stock one that people bring out to have a pop at this programme. There are many other employers that are providing excellent training and opportunities.

It is not a perfect scheme and does not help everyone but for many it has worked.

This programme is for the benefit of the "employer", not the "employee". It is blatantly clear.

This has been discussed at length all over the web.

You think not? I think I would if I had to as I need the £67.50 thanks!

But still I have no idea why you are all going on about working for nothing as I am not
