I know and people on the scheme carry a stigma. My advisor tells me not to mention the scheme to employers.

I think mentioning signing on/being on the WP is very much something that only the individual can manage to do.... it may not be so easy - and everything that may imply (i.e. not much chance of the job...) - or it may take some creative thinking.
It is a terrible sign of the times that there are so many filters that can be used to "weed" people out at various stages of the application process.

You wouldn't put on your CV that you are on JCA or the WP though.

Better than a weekly 100% failure rate trying to find a job by sending off a CV.

    Of course - absolutely not.
BUT - what I am saying is that, for someone l-t unemployed (and define long-term in the case of a CV/employment ("career") history...), there may be something of a "gap" to fill - creatively.

Which brings me to another point; and one which may become more relevant in these difficult times; it is a pity that - and yes, before I get pounced on, I semi-undersatnd why - a CV is seen as a measure of our worth as people who may be good recruits - after all, largely speaking, no one person is simply made up of that one aspect of their life - their job... Why the dickens should an amount of time between jobs actually matter so much...?

(Just a devil's advocate type question - but I say this as a person who has taken voluntary and enforced time away from paid employment - and I don't think that it should be seen as a problem, but of course, it may well be regarded so an used as another of the so-called filters that I mentioned previously.)
    :)
