Is it really compulsory to go on the Work Programme

The work programme was on the news tonight. They were saying there arent enough jobs and the work programme cant really help people into work. There were 2 case studies on there. One girl couldnt get a job and was seen handing her cvs out round town and one man was on there cant remember what he said.
They were trying to get him a job in a factory and getting him "work ready" but they said people on WP have no more cjance of getting a job than anyone else who applies.0 -
Watching it now - wow that's basic for working in a buiscuit factory. The advsior says have clean hands, clean nails, clean clothes!!! LOL
They are saying the WP acts like an agency? Hahaha really? The BBC have shown the WP to be helping people...hmmmm0 -

They were saying how useless it was I think haha0 -
Really? Not what I got from it. It gave the impression that WP are really trying to help people when I know they have no power
I only caught the last half of what they were saying but to me it seemed like they were saying it's useless
We must have took different things from it.
Did you take them to say they are trying their best but there aren't many jobs out there? Maybe that was what they meant.0 -
I have never seen this before but on the DWP site it says
'The Work Programme provides . Participants receive support to overcome barriers that prevent them from finding and staying in work.'
I'd like to know what barriers they are talking about when it comes to staying in work. Being unemployed is the barrier that most come up against when looking for a job and the WP can't do anything to change that.
'tailored support for claimants who need more help to undertake active and effective jobseeking'
I have had no support so far only when I asked them to refund my travel to interview.
There is no way anything can be tailored for thousands of people at the same time.
Only a few weeks now till I go to my 2nd appointment with my providers, can't wait! LOL0 -

maybe not a lot of jobs in Liverpool but there are where I am and they can't get people interviews as they have no power and where would they start looking anyway?I only caught the last half of what they were saying but to me it seemed like they were saying it's useless

It is hard to see quite how the WP deliverers are meant to be able to "find" work where none exists - or where such as does actually exist is available in the public domain.
I see that they try to justify their existence by offering "support" in breaking down personal "barriers" to employment for some people - i.e. shifting the blame to the individual and yet, paradoxically, also attempting to raise self-confidence (?). But the main hurdle to "overcome" is lack of genuine opportunities across the board.
Anything that the provider may offer is patronising bull----, designed to provide employment for themselves but that's all they can realistically hope for.
(Excuse my abundance of "s ... the subject matter seems to warrant their use
) 0
