Oh, I think the majority of people were probably quite content to be left alone.

After all people are quite capable of realizing whether or not they are up to doing some kind of paid work; they don't need the government to give them the green light to start seeking employment if that is what they want to do..........

But the figures seem to suggest otherwise.

I do wonder if there was an incentive to come off long term sickness and find a job?

I will have to look for that, so presumably then you do now send in copies of reports/letters etc.

Yep! you do if you want to have a fair and balanced decision made about your claim.

    Thats news to me.
I was told they had to have several medicals, and then were reassessed at least every couple of years. Was that not the case?

(In fact one claimant with no legs told me they even pestered her for reassessment, presumably to see if her legs had grown back!)

    Nah, all hype!

Once you were on it you were very unlucky if they re-assessed you after a couple of years.

It was a good scam, drawing a £100 or so in benefit every week and not having to do anything for it.
A good number held down jobs that paid cash in hand as well.
Well to be honest they must have been bored out of their scull just languishing on benefits year in year out.

No, thats just propaganda, and you fell for it.

People were regularily assessed, by the same company, ATOS, had to fill in forms just like now, appeals were common place, like now.

Most of my problems, incorrect assessments, dodgy medical reports, harrassment of far to regular (and dodgy) assessments/forms etc are from Incapacity benefit.

Its been a well known problem for over a decade.

The media and government are putting out the lie that people were left alone, or given IB no questions asked, in order to justify the harsher ESA rules.

Give it another few years, or a decade or so, and a government is likely to be saying the latest even harsher invention is required, as people on ESA were left alone and given it no questions asked....

Well I must have missed all of the fun then.

Went onto IB in Dec 94, never had a medical - was passported because of level of DLA awarded. Came off IB in 2002.

In those 8 years no one ever asked me to prove that I was genuinely sick.

You were exempted because you were receving DLA HRC. Claimants who weren't were regularly assessed.

As you seem to know so much about it, probably through experience we'll take your word for it shall we?.

Some people were regularly assessed, many like me were not as we were ajudged to be unable to work for life, in my case it was done in 1992 on the old IVB and Ive never had a form or assessment since, nor have I had to produce a sick line since.

It my case the decision was correct but there were many other cases that were not, especially round here when at least 60% of the pit men went straight on to sick to massage the unemployment figures for maggie, most of then never worked again (well not legally!)

I was on middle rate care for more than a decade and then I became exempt due to high rate care.

Actually through the many people that I know that were doing it! I was too ill and too medicated to get out of bed, never mind have a job!

An ex friend musician I knew was on IB for years, also had DLA, but somehow managed to work the pubs and clubs 3/4 nights a week!

So glad that you can back me up on this thread!
Yes I also remember the mass exodus from Unemployment Benefit to IB - even the Jobcentres were actively moving people across!

As for working and claiming - it was the accepted thing to do - how else could people manage to live.

But thats only because you are a lying troll.

Incapacity benefit was not even introduced till april 1995.

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that
