mfi kitchen's good or bad

  • Ive had 2 kitchens from mfi and would highly recommend them.
  • Ours was around the £6K mark.

As chipboard goes, it looks ok.

The fitters were contracted by MFI and I wasn't impressed. Despite having booked a week to complete tthe job, the fitters (sorry, fitter - there was justy one young man) left after three days. There were a number of doors missing, the dishwasher looked like it had been dropped and didn't work. The cutout for the sink was left bare - I've always varnished the bare edge to avoid water damage. One of the nails holding the hardboard backs onto the carcass had missed the carcass. All in all I was left disappointed.

MFI promised to fix the problems by the end of February (it was December and Christmas approaching). After many calls and threats of court action, they found some doors and a dishwasher and fitted them before Christmas. A different fitter came to finish the job.

If chipboard is your choice I recommend shopping around and contracvt someone to fit the kitchen yourself. Why pay MFI's mark-up? With hindsight, I wish I'd taken a week off work and done the job myself.

One more thing, be wary of the Diplomat range of kitchen appliances. The grill in ours has one temperature setting and the instruction book says for different heats move the grill pan to a lower/higher position. High tech or what?

    :)

  • Thanks - yes, two days after I wrote about Tesco vouchers I received booklet through the post with no more MFI vouchers. Spoilsports! Have changed posting.
  • mfi were meant to come out today to do a pre fit for the kitchen no sign after two hours and my temper ready to explode got a phone call to say it would now be tomorrow, If this is the start of things to come think im in for a nightmare.

I can also recommend MFI Kitchens, although they have all been fitted privately (saves lots!) All my drawers still work well and doors etc look as new after 5 years. IMO they are much better quality than B&Q.
  • Is it true that MFI have recently changed ownership? I'm not sure
Nothing to see here, move along.

yep. last october the company was sold to a private equity group.

reading this thread, it appears that supply only is generally ok and good value, whilst the supply/fit deals are causing the problems?
    Get some gorm.
  • We’ll be installing a new kitchen in the next 4 months. We like the high gloss finish and after last weekend at the moment MFI are looking favourite to get our business.
However this weekend we’ll be visiting Magnet Trade and Howdens.
We’ve also had a few other companies round to quote for a kitchen and I’m amazed just how much the quotes vary. Just how much can you sell a piece of MDF for?!

On another note has anyone got one of these high gloss kitchens, in particular the laminated doors style rather than painted doors.
If so have you had any problems with it? i.e. Marks easily.

I've had two high gloss kitchens and they're fine. They haven't marked, wipe clean easily but I wouldn't take a scouring pad to them!

I saw the Space Black range yesterday and fell in love with it instantly.

The quote came in at £12500 but their current sale is rubbish. I said I wanted it nearer £10k and he said it wouldn't be problem! (I didn't aim low enough, lol!) I'm sure that Howdens do that range with solid carcasses though and I've already found walnut worktops at half the price without even really looking. £240 for glass shelves that I can get in Ikea for a total of £60 and as for appliances, well, £500 for a wine cooler is pushing it somewhat!

I think I could pull it in around £7000 without much stress.

dont say i didnt warn you, good luck you'll need it!:eek:it's not so much the products it is the service it is well below standard for the price you pay, some fitters spoil it for the rest of them that are doing an alright job, some managers have no manners and spoil it for the ones that have and the customer aftercare well what can i say MFI are always right the ombudsman notices in frames around the store are not worth the paper they are written on best to get private fitter so they will take care of your new kitchen and the rest of your property with more respect.
also the prefit may not be all it seems eg, once they start the job and damage your plaster they might suddenly create a whole new job of plaster work taking up more days and costing more money and then being left with blown out cupboards which were put on wet plaster couldnt call them fitted they werent screwed into walls! you might even find the pre fit plan doesnt work in real life like installing heating under a fridge freezer which was what my fitter planned then when it was realised it would 1.)ruin guarantee of freezer 2.)not fit anyway under unit cos of legs!!! we have been left with no heating in kitchen and cos it was gas plinth that was there prior to fitting and bought with the kitchen it is nothing to do with MFI even though the fitter disconnected it ready for his superb plan!!!!!!!!!! these are only two small grieviances caused at my house if you look at my other post you'll get a clearer picture be careful keep a diary (eg,we had no sink or cooker until friday night and then couldnt use it as the water cascaded down the cupboard and out down kitchen floor )you must take photos of what is going on and move your appliances or they may be a tatty mess when theyve finished using them as a workhorse to build base units on,placed hammers and mallets etc on be careful because in the end youve no proof of any of it and noone will compensate for the damage unless you keep diary and photos each day.
