Its time to grow up and pay off the mortgage

  • Hello - you need to have the day you want for your wedding. Do not do it for others you will regret it. My first wedding was more for other peoples benefit. This time round it was for us and us alone. It was a fraction of the cost and the best day ever. We got married on a Tuesday as the date was important to us, not the day. The venue gave us a 15% discount for a mid week booking. There were some "well meant" attempts at advice (interference) but we stuck to our plan. Going away is a lovely idea if that is truely what you want but that is the over-riding thing - what you want. Be aware that some people love the opportunity to go with you to celebrate and enjoy the chance of a holiday too, so you don't get a honeymoon away together. As for being in the centre of things, its a very different type of attention but work out what is important to you. The other option is to go and get married just the 2 of you and then have a do after, a friend of mine did that and had a fab day and then a fab party that was not as formal as a wedding. Good luck with all the planning xxx:)

Hi numptyknownothing, thanks for the words of advice - definitely food for thought...though the thought of people coming with me when i'm 'eloping' totally defeats the purpose - I hadn't even considered that people would offer to come with us!

Will have to give it some thought, but have seen some beautiful all inclusive packages for circa £5k, which is a bit more reasonable, then come back and have a 'do' with friends and family.

Have seen too many of my friends get consumed for years with the organisation of a wedding, and that's just not for me!

well I've printed off my online shopping list to take in to store after work tomorrow.

Got it pretty close to the £60 I need for my £6 off coupon. Really hoping I can stick to it to get the most of the offer. I usually fail spectacularly, so am most determined :)

Also got vouchers for 20p/litre off and I'm hoping I can make it on the fumes that are there to maximise the saving.

Just had a text from friends asking if they can stay tomorrow for a few nights - better get the guest room all made up! Beginning to think I should open a B&B!!!!:rotfl:

Same here... no wonder we can't get a lodger, the spare room is always occupied by a friend or family member whether visiting us or just need a room!

So pleased! I did very well! Spent £61.50, so an acceptable overspend me thinks! Have meals planned for the next week, plus a stock up of essentials/toileteries.

Also got £10.20 off my petrol £68 down to £57.80 J Wishing I stocked up with more of the weetabix now! Would've saved another fiver!:p

    Things to do

Consider change to EDF (utilities supplier) – although I made the decision a few months ago to stay with EON, I’m thinking it might be worth switching to EDF to fix for the next two winters (instead of only 2012 with EON). Estimated saving: £63 (inc £10 eon exit fee / tesco points) although I need to check if EDF charge IGT fee (emailed).
Plus £30 cashback through moneysupermarket. Although reviews give EDF appalling feedback/customer service. I’ve always been impressed with Eon – worth £5/month? Hmmmmm.

    [STRIKE]
OH application for FD. £100 to him, £50 referral to me. Plus he can make use of the 8% regular saver.
[/STRIKE] He cant be bothered :(

Batch cook / get meals organised for next week.

2 loads of washing - supposed to be nice day on Saturday, so will hopefully get them dried outside. Horrible day forecast for Sunday though.

Freezer inventory - still to do

Finally got through to EDF - their customer response time is very slow, the 'callback' option is non-existant (over 24hrs and still nothing!) and their response to emails is dire- and that's for a potential new customer!

Though in the end they have confirmed that EDF no longer charge anything for IGT.

So am off to switch (throught the moneysupermarket link for my cashback) to EDF tonight.

Its been such a long month - still 2 days to payday :(

well I finally bit the bullet and switched energy suppliers.

Fingers crossed it goes smoothly, as I had absolutely no fault with Eon, but I'm simply not rich enough to pay them £70/year (and more if they increase prices next year) just cos I liked them!

I called them(eon) this morning to see what happens with our online account, and the man was really nice and said that it would still be accessible and our account history still available. Which is handy. He asked if which deal I was considering, and would look to see if they had anything (I already was on their best), when he saw this he apologised for eon not being able to match / offer anything to keep me. which is an absolute shame - you would think there would be some form of customer retentions?! I would've much rather stayed - bet the devil you know and all that!:rotfl:

But my procrastination cost me the £30 cashback for going through a comparison site. Lesson Learned!

I registered my interest, and now need to consider my goal.

Good to see that the challange is also suitable for saving over the 3 years. I dont know whether to set a mortgage goal AND a saving goal or just concentrate on the mortgage.

If anyone reads this thread, they know I'm trying to save for a wedding, but are probably thinking that if I can take months of torturous "oh what to do for the best" over a simple utilities company, goodness knows what I'd be like trying to sort out something big like a wedding!!:rotfl:

Probably will never happen in the three years, so probably best just focussing on the mortgage! There - decision made :T

Eek, just registered for the mfi3-t3 and hope to get our mortgage down to 90k!!! This is circa £40k in 3 years  that's a huge commitment, but I'm nothing if not determined!

I'm ignoring the car and wedding requirements within the same timeframe:rotfl:
