    Er... Pagani, I think...

Anyway, I only know of one french car I could get comfortable in the driving seat of, and that was an Avantime, so that's the main reason I don't even bother looking at them, but I did read something relevant: In the JD Power satisfaction survey, the Aygo was top in class, whereas the practically identical C1 and 106 were much lower down, and the reason they gave for that was dealers and servicing IIRC. But don't take that as a recommendation to buy a toyota; I think their cars pretty hateful, too.

I think that says more for pr, and how gullible people are.
Same car, same production line, Toyota are Japanese, so must be best, and they can charge a premium for the badge. People will pay it.

Toyota also have manufacturing tie ups with Renault, as do Nissan, Samsung Motors, and Daimler.

I'll freely admit to being a fan of Nissans but you wouldn't catch me buying a modern one because as you rightly point out, they're pretty much Renaults now.

The Nissan-Renault tie-up could have been awesome. We could have gotten Renaults with French design and styling* and Japanese engines and electrics. Instead we got Nissans with Japanese design and styling but French engines and electrics.

I'm not complaining about the engine - it doesn't seem to be bad - quite good for a diesel actually. It's the modern gearbox that is the problem - very jerky and ridiculously slow changing gear. I think comparing it to a 20year old design is quite reasonable.

What engine was in the Pug? Autoboxes are always terrible when hooked up to small revvy engines. They work best with big lazy engines with at least 6 cylinders.

    * Which a lot of people seem to like. I'm not personally a fan of it

    Makes you wonder why though.

The only decent car designers have ever been italian, or the good old days when the "GT" badge meant you got a supercharger, and a set of flying goggles with the Alvis.

Both my local Pug dealers have gone bust.

Yes the 1.6HDi engine is nice todrive. But have a google of DPF and turbo problems...

    +1

We sold an 06 car with that engine - the DPF went, the turbo went and its blowing out blue smoke randomly and noone can tell us why. We've spent nigh on £3,000 on the car, and noone can get it running right.

I'd love to know where all these people are who buy a car, pay a premium, find it's crap and then take the time to tell the surveys how great it was.

Likewise I'd love to know where all these people are who buy a car, don't pay a premium, find that the service is great and then take the time to tell the surveys how crap it was.

They're an interesting bunch I'll give you that.

Quite, if you could get a nice Italian design, maybe a slightly modernised version of the Lancia Stratos or something equally cool and then stick a tuned Nissan RB26DETT engine in there from the R34 Skyline along with the associated electrics, brakes, suspension etc. Maybe get BMW to do the Interior trim so that you dont get recycled tupperware that falls apart after 5 years. You'd be close to a perfect car then.

Edit: Oh and get Volvo to give the design a once over looking for weak points, water traps and have them take care of rustproofing, primer and undercoat.

Volvo, bought by Ford then sold onto the Geely Automotive Company in china?
Cars are just a brand name now, owned by anyone, built anywhere.

I meant proper Volvos. I'd presumed this was obvious given I picked a 70s chassis and a 90s engine (which is itself, an 80s design)

I get the point you're making, really I do. You do need to check who actually designed and built your car, lest you accidentally buy an 05 plated "British" city car that's really a rebadged Indian car from the 90s

Peugeots still have French electrics, however.

Well, some of them do anyway. Others are built by Mitsubishi in Japan, and I don't see too much French electricals there.
