Common rail was originally a Fiat (FPT) thing, they sold the technology to Bosch who then punted it primarily to VW in TDi guise.

Remember that VW owners when you are spouting nonsense about Fiat ;)

You'll find most car manufacturers develop joint technology. It's too expensive to go it alone now, and they all have to work to the same standards.

    It's all down to PR.
Look at the VW adverts, Either you can't believe it's so cheap (that's because that's all it's worth, no one would pay more, they're built down to a price now), or it has a sound effect of a door going "clunk". They all go "clunk", otherwise they would fail the crash tests.
Nothing actually on what you're buying, the car, anymore.

  • i not going to batter pug citroen or renault, i see plenty on the road, and plenty in repair garages too, just any popular vehilce look at fords how many are out there how many are in garages being repaired and parts are just as cheap unless its maindealer only after your manufacturers warranty wich you should always have a contingency plan up your sleeve with regards to putting x amount away monthly for any given failure that arises.

all vehicle have faults and past history over the french made vehicles has long lasted into todays society.

opinion is based upon the indevidual, and taken at face value.

DE-DPF a vehicle is perfectly fine, just dont DE-CAT my father vauxhaul combo DPF filled up he took it into the garage they cleaned it out and then took it for a test drive only for it to completely flood the engine with diesel (so beware when you opt to have it cleaned) resulting in the company to take a decision they have three 07 model yr combo vans, each of them is going in for DE DPF and RE MAP to compensate. my dad van is having a brand new VX supplied engine put in his work van and the garage is completely stripping out the DPF and remapping the van, resulting in £5k spent in the van wich is cheaper than buying in a new van at £14k then having £1k spent on kitting out the back for dads work equipment because the company dont lease the van the buy them in and run them till they die. dads last van was a S reg escort van than kept going and going and going, passed every MOT though looked like a pile of shiet on the outside, was clean and low mileage and very reliable when the company auctioned it off.

TBH, these days i would settle very well on a new renault or pug but not the 207's i dont like them and base level ones are just horrid drives and not very roomy or comfortable long drives become boring and reptative and driving position is all wrong to be sat low infront of a massive dash.

the 308 are much more better.

with electric failure yes they tend to go a bit OTT with sensors, just ensure that theres a sump guard fitted (and garages dont throw it away like some do) and the engine cover is large enough to protect what underneath.

The himalayas aren't in france, the french alps are.
And they have snow on them, probably more than 18 inches in places. And the french drive up them, in their french cars.
Even in the 207 the op has asked about.

But, I really do have to give it up to you.
    No more, please.

Peugeot didn't finish 30th out of 34 in the Auto Express drivers survey for nothing, in fact go on the site and search Peugeot electrical problems and just about every long term test car they have had has suffered from them !

It's my money and I simply wouldn't buy French ever again.

It's like Russian roulette with a French car, except instead of one bullet you have to avoid, it is five and you have to find the one empty chamber !

I wouldn't buy a French car new, that's for certain -- the poor survey performance largely reflects poor build quality more than anything else, and although most of these problems will have been hoovered up by the time the car is out of warranty, it's not something I'd want to be bothered with.

I've seen this with work colleagues; they buy a new French car then they're back at the dealership half a dozen times in the first year with problems that really should have been picked up by what passes for QC in the factory.

However, buying second-hand the niggles are counterbalanced by the fact that the oily bits are usually pretty solid, they don't tend to rot and they're very cheap to buy.

There are a few examples of French cars I wouldn't buy (small ones have offset pedals that would give me terrible sciatica due to the poor quality RHD conversions, the mid-2000s Laguna diesel was a horror story, the Megane from the same period wasn't much better and the 307 seems to get through suspension parts like there's no tomorrow) but to be honest I would buy a used French car if it was cheap enough, and it was the best option for the money at the time.

Most new Peugeots I just can't stand the look of though. I've never had much time for the bulbous, amorphous blob look.

Older pugs were bombproof but nowadays just about any French second hand car is a time bomb waiting to go off. Most are very competent when new, look at the amount of Lagunas still plying for hire in any town, but once they need something out of the ordinary maintenence schedule, either electrical or mechanical, they really are a pain. Much better for Mr and Mrs Family to drive off happy in an older Focus than wait for the shinier 307 to come back on a wagon.
