Peugeot- They are now good cars...discuss..

I had a 508 SW Auto delivered today as a hire car from an insurance company. I can honestly say it is the most hatefull car to drive I have ever came across. Performance is sluggish at best and gearchanges are at best slow and at worst make overtaking dangerous. I normally drive a 12 year old jag auto and the gearbox on it is so much better than the one in the pug that I wonder which 1950's parts bin pug dragged it out of. So from my point of view I would never even consider buying a pug0

While I'm also not a fan of modern day Peugeots, I think comparing it to an old Jag that probably has at least a 3 litre V6 in it is maybe just a little unfair? The 508 is likely best compared against the Insignia, Mondeo etc. surely?
Let us know what you think next time you hire a car and end up in a 1.8 petrol Insignia 0 0

If no one bought cars that were unreliable, we'd all be driving Nissan Primeras. And I'd probably want to kill myself. Go for the Peugeot OP, just think you'll be keeping your local indie garage in business for the next few years too. The 207 is actually a good little car. Some of the best cars ever made rarely ever worked properly!0

It's ok to buy a car despite it being unreliable, but only if you get something else in exchange, such as fun driving it e.g. Strider's 306 or any non-Fiat* Italian car.
The OP is looking at a small diesel hatchback for practical purposes. Get a reliable one.
 * Ok there are a few exceptions, such as the Arbath branded cars, or the X1/90

Only been in one Pug 207, think it had 'Verve' badge on the side. It had a big matte silver surround on the centre dashboard binnacle which caused the most godawful reflection off the windscreen. I have no idea how drivers aren't constantly distracted by it.0

Get something Japanese (toyota, honda, suzuki) or a skoda.
 Save yourself the grief0

I'm not complaining about the engine - it doesn't seem to be bad - quite good for a diesel actually. It's the modern gearbox that is the problem - very jerky and ridiculously slow changing gear. I think comparing it to a 20year old design is quite reasonable.0

            Which one are they?
 Er... Pagani, I think...
Anyway, I only know of one french car I could get comfortable in the driving seat of, and that was an Avantime, so that's the main reason I don't even bother looking at them, but I did read something relevant: In the JD Power satisfaction survey, the Aygo was top in class, whereas the practically identical C1 and 106 were much lower down, and the reason they gave for that was dealers and servicing IIRC. But don't take that as a recommendation to buy a toyota; I think their cars pretty hateful, too.0
