Tube Drivers Again.

It isn't even 20%.
As I said earlier, google it.
With mainline train drivers, our local TOC says for every 317 applicants they get one fully trained driver and the tube is not dissimilar.
As I keep repeating, the skills are not brain surgery BUT the combination of the required skills are a bit unusual !
Secondly, the unions are needed to make sure that safety is not compromised for both staff and the public and to make sure that standards are kept high. They do a lot of good work behind the scenes regarding training, education etc etc but as that doesn't suit the media's outlook it never gets publicised.
And stats tell you whatever you like. You seriously think only 1 in every 317 people is capable of doing the job? Or is it they get 317 applicants per job because it is so ridiculously overpaid.0 -
Please outline what is so difficult?
For the umpteenth time ...No-one has said it is difficult.
It is the combination of skills that is rare.
Concentration and reactions don't always marry up but they need to in this job so there is one test to prove that you have those skills.
There is also a look at your personality to check that you are suitable to do the job ON YOUR OWN - not everyone can cope with this.
There are a number of tests where the combination of personality, skills, aptitude and attitude are assessed. It costs a fortune to train them so they must make sure they put through the best candidates for the job.
If you have passed initial assessment then you have a structured interview to see if you are suitable for the job (ie can you do shiftwork and work on your own ?) and if you get through that, you have a normal job interview.
Not many people get through this because the combination of these skills / attitudes / personality traits.
It is not about intelligence, it's about marrying up the right skills for the job with the right personality to find someone who treats the job with the professionalism it deserves. Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -

Pointless carrying on - you don't listen anyway.
The drivers are expected to behave like professionals, drive their trains like professionals and are paid like professionals.
That's why they are well paid - it is a responsible job driving around thousands of people and the powers that be don't want any 'Tom, !!!!!! or Harry' doing it.
They want those with the right skillset and attitude and why the assessments have been designed for that job. Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -
Gatwick !!! That one stop from the South to North terminals, not exactly too thorough a proving ground !!
No- but it is a demonstration of things to come. The Volks railway in Brighton was the worlds first electrified railway with just two stops and the same could be said of that in 1883 when it opened, but by 1964 Japan had the bullet train. Small beginnings and all that....0 -
Secondly, as soon as they can replace them with automated trains, they will. That's what business is all about...
Of course they will, but if it is running OK and on budget there is no need to replace it, the automation becomes more financialy viable the more the labour costs. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Civil engineers, Chemists, lawyers, bankers, the clergy and the medical profession are professionals mostly degree level or higher, are you honestly using that term for a railway engine operator?

a trained monkey to drive a tube. they are paid so highly because that fat f**k crow and his ilk make them strike EVERY year and they always get what they want. As a londoner who uses the tube, I would be happy for it to be closed down for 6 months and all these filth bags sacked if it meant new drivers on 18k which is what they deserve. I could get a bus, cycle, walk, get overground, drive if the worst came to the worst. so could most people.
CLOSE DOWN THE TUBE AND CALL THEIR BLUFF.0 -
For once I agree with you, though nearer 22-24,000 would be a fair wage IMO.The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett
