If they are going to be replaced as you think then it could be argued to make hay while the sun shines.
Secondly, as soon as they can replace them with automated trains, they will. That's what business is all about...
Thing is that LU is not really a business. It is a state subsidised service. They would probably be happy to keep on quietly as they are, but the unons keep drawing more attention to them with all the threats and demands, thereby annoying the public, who would now be happy to see them replaced even if it does cost more.0 -

Actually they do - you have even said it yourself !!
It's a much sought after job with a difficult assessment that you need certain skills to get through that not all of us are blessed with.
It is not an intelligence test - it is a skills test and generally you either have them or you don't.Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -

Um... let's wait and see on that part !
Whilst they are not in favour I would struggle to see people pay for them to be replaced. People are highly principled but quite happy to forego their principles if it affects their wallet !Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -

Bolox. Piece of !!!! job. My reference to cant be replaced is in relation to the fact that legally they can't just be sacked and a new lot hired.0 -

It is something that hundreds of thousands of others could learn in a short period of time, and would be happy to do for less without threatening to strike every other week.0 -

No it isn't - you need the skills to be given the chance to do the job ! You have to pass the assessment and not that many do.
And what is your definition of a short period of time ?
As with the 'threatening to strike' that is a different argument.
Ps I'm not a tube driver btw. Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -

What incredibly rare skills are these then?0 -
What incredibly rare skills are these then?
Google it.
They are not 'incredibly rare' skills, you have put those words into the equation, they are just skills that when combined, not that many people have.
Reaction tests, mechanical tests, concentration tests, memory tests to name but a few.
And I will ask again, what is your definition of 'a short period of time that hundreds of thousands could learn' how to drive a tube train ?Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -

OK, there are probably only tens of thousands of people with the required skills who would take the job tomorrow if offered.0
