  • Yep, I just bought two kilos of carrots for 78 pence. No voddy here, alas. Just as well that I never drink alcohol at home or I'd get nothing done at that price.

Hiya, tomorrow I am planning to go to our nearest l!dl (16 miles away) instead of MrM (9 miles) and i was wondering whether there is anything I should definitely look out for/avoid? I am quite excited as everyone seems to say how cheap it is but knowing me, I'll end up spending a fortune :o and I don't want to do that.

    Thanks!

Make sure you take your own bags. Load the conveyer belt, the sales assistant will whip through them so quickly you won't know what to do with yourself. Just bung them back in your trolley and then take the trolley over to the shelf by the window and pack your bags. If I am getting lots of tins then I pick up the boxes that they are in and put all the tins in them to carry. Also pick up other odd boxes as well if they will help.

  • I'll second the lidl jam it's the only one my son will eat, which means a special visit just for him (!) I do like their coffee too, and the potato salad is the best ever, as is the ham (pack of big slices).
Another great find is the big packs of tissues (handy size) about 18 in a pack and they are the only ones which don't break up in the colour wash ( I always miss one pocket).
Personally I don't rate the fresh meat but checkout the freezer for some great offers, like the turkeys for £9.99 and strange offers - kangaroo steak anyone?
great friendly staff in my local too.
    xx

As this thread is more related to shopping than Old Style, I've moved it over to the Food Shopping & Groceries board.

I've taken to going to Lidl's weekly recently with a quick stop off in Sainsbury's for the few things I can't get there.

As well as the things listed already, I'm a fan of their frankfurters (much cheaper than Herta and just as good), dishwasher salt (ace packaging) and rinse aid, luxury muesli to die for (we like the blue pack best).

Thanks for the tinned peaches reminder. I like to keep a tin on stand-by for unexpected guests. I heat the peach halves gently with a slug of brandy (in the saucepan that is!) and serve with cream or ice-cream. Yum!!

  • As other people have said, Lidl's meats are good, as is the coleslaw, veg and chocolate. I'd pass on their cottage cheese though, as to me it seems to be a bit of an odd consistency (though this could be cos I'm used to other brands!). Also, in my nearest store, the fruit doesn't seem to be particularly nice - but it seems other people don't encounter this problem, so I guess it's just down to individual stores.

Don't know if anyone's mentioned this is any other thread, but I was really excited to find out at the end of my Lidl shop yesterday, that if you shop at the end of the day Lidl often have boxes of food that's on it's sell-by date that they tell you you can have for free! I was so chuffed as I managed to find a pack of chicken legs, some English muffins, and some salad for nothing. Feel really silly being so excited about this, but it's not often you can get grocery items for free. I hope my discovery may also be useful to other people :)

I am shopping often late at my local Lidl and never ever seen food given for free. I see that some food has 30% off but they never reduce it any further...

    What time did it happen?
  • unlike canned food now i have opted for seasonal local food ! delicious and u buy what you need !

I think the free food may well depend on the manager or who ever in charge on that day or just how much there is of a particular item.

Ive been in between 4pm and 6 and seen loaves of bread on the side for free.
