My dmp startout journey

Currently starting the process of doing a dmp. First piece of advice....open an new bank account. Applied with Barclays, answer today no thanks due to credit checks....and this is before I have defaulted!!!

Can anyone advise me of an easy account to open?

I cant go with santander, halifax hsbc or co-op due to them being creditors. I need the account to accept wages in, direct debits out and if possible card to withdraw cash and make payments on in shops and online etc. Oh and online banking so I can see where I am at or is that too much to ask?

If push comes to shove, could I just stay with my bank? I owe them £500 cc (not defaulted and making minimum payments) and £800 overdraft. I can probably afford to keep the cc payments up but I am more worried about them cancelling the overdraft.

I need to sort this out fast so I can get on with the plan and send new bank details off to cccs, wages dept etc and also need to move fast before my bank get wind of it all, just in case they close my account.

Any advice anyone?

Did you apply for the correct account with barclays - they do a BASIC account which I believe does not have any credit checks. The other basic account is with the Co-op but I see they are a creditor. Otherwise consider a building society such as hte Yorkshire - you will be able to get a cashcard, direct debits, internet access etc but NO debit card and obviously no overdraft facility.

Can I suggest you get a prepaid credit card, with that you can use in the shops and the internet. Also a basic bank account. Once you get used to it you will find it really good and the bonus is you can't get into debt! You can only spend what you have. good luck

    Hi
I was in your position last year went with natwest and got a debit card with tem they were very helpfull good luck it does get better bit by bit
  • Thanks everyone.

I was starting to feel a bit dis-heartened. Like I had just fallen at the first hurdle!

I have looked into martin lewis's advice and see that with the barclays one, lots of people seem to make the mistake of trying to open their basic current account. They then get the letter like I have to say sorry but unsuccessful. Fullstop! Barclays dont advise you at this point that you could apply for a cash card account that you will probably succeed in getting. This is obviously what I have done!!

Apparently the banks dont want to you have these accounts so dont advertise them and if you dont ask for the right one specifially, then they dont volunteer the information!! Go figure!!

So, I am hoping I can pop into a branch one day next week if I get finished work early enough and it seems like I might be able to open one then and there!

    Bloody banks!!! :)

    Hi,

I switched from Lloyds to Natwest just before doing an IVA 6 years ago. They were fairly east to join then (not sure about now) - debit card, standard account, just said no thanks to the overdraft!

Still with them now - cant fault them actually!
  • I also switched to natwest just before I set up my IVA, it was a basic a/c although I did have a cheque book and a Solo card. Over time I was given a Visa Debit card. I don't know if they did a credit check but they did ask me to come back with bank statements etc, good luck!

I cant got with rbs as they are connected to halifax.

I dont want to apply for anymore current accounts as I think they all do credit checks which for some reason I am failing. (I say for some reason as I have not actually defaulted on anything yet).

So I will try the barclays basic next week and see how I get on.

Good luck with your dmp. I am scared sick what these next couple of months are going to be like. I am hoping the creditors dont start hounding me or worse, ringing me at work!! Time will tell I suppose.

I believe there is a list of accounts that dont do a credit check listed in one of the guides on main site. I applied online because I couldnt face a person across a desk if I got turned down. I dont believe I was credit checked for this one tho, so do a search and see what u come up with.
My debt advisor told me all letters I had received so for were bog standard, designed to scare me, she said to ignore them. Try not to worry ss....we're on the right path now...chin up x
