  • Here's a few hints to help:

When they phone and ask for security details, say " can you just hang on a sec!" leave the phone off the hook and go back to watching the telly.

Say " I'm sorry my mums not in im 7yo and she has left me home alone whilst she is on holiday.

Say " Your not the person they are asking for"

One trick that worked for me is log on to your online account if you still can and change your contact numbers, you need to do this daily over the course of a week as they do hold a certain amount of old numbers. Best ones to change them to are " MBNA call centre" "Radio1 Flirt Divert" " Your local Bank" or a number you know no to exsist.

Of course you could change your number with BT or unplug the phone and use your mobile.

  • so do you think it would be cheeky to - very nicely - of course to do a programme where he sort of names and shames companies that are hassling people who are actively trying to sort out their debts?

What strikes me is that these ideas on how to deal with MBNA etc are all very well to do at the time but surely there's no need to treat people like the way that has been described - I'm sure that the same company has been very charming when everything was going swimmingly.

What makes their attitude/actions even worse is that we are not dealing with back street lenders here - where you could almost appeciate the attitude - but by main stream lenders.

I just think that if somebody as high profile as Martin looked into it then these companies may just be shamed into altering their ways.

  • I think that creditors have to realise they are harming themselves by this behaviour. I have 13 creditors and have opted for a dmp, but if they were all like MBNA I would go for IVA or bankruptcy, or even just RUN AWAY!

  • Blimey i got the exact same letter today,, was going to call them and tell them i am with CCCS - am 5 months into my DMP,.,,, no way am i going to do that now

    THANKS FOR POSTING LOOBY!
  • I only spoke to a representitive once and told them my CCCS ref number and that from now on they should deal directly with CCCS. After that I just stopped answering my mobile each time a number rang that I didn't recognise (they then started texting me via moneyfacts?). Not spoken to MBNA, or recieved any letters in 6 months thank goodness!

I just think that if somebody as high profile as Martin looked into it then these companies may just be shamed into altering their ways.

I totally agree with the above quote! MBNA or whoever they employ to do their chasing should be publicly hung, drawn and quartered!

Failing that, they should be made to change their abominable practice of repeatedly calling customers in difficulty demanding extra payments, intimidation, threatening behaviour, and generally being downright rude.

If a sales assistant in a shop behaved in this manner they'd get the sack!
  • just a quick follow up from my phone call with MBNA they have now passes me on to credit solutions limited who I had a letter from yesterday. Telling me to pay the arrears, even though I have told them I can't and I have sent MBNA a token payment. Can't wait until my DMP is set up (through CCCS) but just waiting for my new bank account to come through from Citibank.

All advice and companies I have used thanks to ALL you wonderful people who do not make me feel like I am an idiot or worthless.
    once again many many thanks.

bumping this thread because I got another letter from MBNA today and I'm wondering what it means and what, if anything I should do about it.

Quick background for anyone who hasn't read the full thread.

I owe MBNA about £4000, I was up to date on my payments to them but robbing peter to pay paul every month, had my LBM and contacted CCCS to set up a DMP which started in Jan. MBNA where the first of my creditors to accept reduced payments and stop interest and charges. I've had one nasty call from them since the DMP was set up (which is when I started this thread) but since then nothing until today.

This is what the letter says.

    Dear Mrs Looby

We have tried to contact you about the arrears on your account but we have been unable to get in touch with you.
(this is a complete lie, the only time they have tried to phone me in the past was the phone call that started off this thread. I have caller display which stores the last 10 phone calls so they haven't phoned when I was out either)

The reason for the call was to discuss your MBNA Credit Card Account. As we are now receiving regular monthly payments, we may be in a position to restructure your outstanding arrears and release you from your obligation to immediately repay those arrears (as required by our standard terms) on condition you make a number of payments specified by us?
(does this mean they are going to start demanding more money from me even though they agreed to accept reduced payments just a couple of months ago) If you meet that condition we will clear the remaining arrears and notify the Credit Reference Agency of the revised account status.

The effect of the account restructure is solely to bring your account up to date and will not affect the outstanding balance of the account. This offer is dependent upon (the standard minimum/your existing level of) monthly payments being maintained.

If you want to know more about this process, then please contact us on freephone number 0800 389 9002 where one of our specialists will be able to assist you. If we are unable to restructure your outstanding arrears in a way which would be acceptable to us, then you will continue to be in default and incur late fees and we reserve the right to take further action.
(they have already agreed to stop all late fees and charges for 12 months as long as they received the agreed reduced payments every month, which they have via cccs. Can they suddenly just backtrack on this)

Meanwhile, it is extremely important that you maintain (the standard minimum/ you existing lever of) future payments.

    What should I do now???

    Ignore it.

I had a similar letter, and they are trying to get you to borrow more money. If they do ring you, then just reiterate that they must deal with the CCCS, and say that you cannot afford any more money. I found that eventually they got the message and stopped bothering me. They are also one of the companies that no longer charge me interest!

Thanks for that, it just seemed to contradict everything they have already agreed to and I know what a bunch of @r$eholes MBNA can be when they want to was worried this is where it all kicked off!!
