Hi Looby, SOrry to hear about your ordeal.
I have had the same type of call in the past and even been told that its my own fault I am in debt and I would receive calls until I settled my debt.
I politely told the young women that she had no legal rights to speak to me that way and by law they are obliged to follow a a code of conduct when speaking with customers by phone.
This idiot that you spoke to has overstept the mark and I really do think that you should make an official complaint about his behaviour.
I recently did this with the Halifax and spoke to her Manager who assured me that that it would be investigated. Remember that most of the calls from the banks are recorded so you should have proof of his sh*tty attitude towards you.
I am not saying complain out of malice but who next is he going to do this too and what if they are not as strong willed as yourself?
I find the whole thing disgusting. They are are creditors and should not be Judge, Jury and Executioners.
Sorry to rant but after the day ive had on the phone to the Halifax this kind of struck a chord.
Keep your chin up and dont let em get down.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 297 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts0 -
Similar happened to me in 2000 (pre MSE - more's the pity!), I came home from visiting my husband of 39 in hospital (he'd had a heart attack, followed by angioplasty and stent) to a message on the answer machine from a horrible man from the Associates, accusing me of trying to hide from them - "I know you're there answer the phone -or else etc"!! I was in bits as was not aware of any problem, rang back and spoke to him he was still very rude so asked to speak to his supervisor, replayed the msg to her and she said it was fine and not threatening at all!! If only I knew then what I know now!! Good for you for standing up to him, I hope you'll make the complaint he really does sound like a nasty piece of work!
A bit of an aside but I'm surprised no one on here mentions the Associates (I finished with them many years ago what a bunch of bandits!!) perhaps they're not around anymore?I stopped smoking 25th June 2007STILL Never complacent but confidentMy debt is GOING DOWN!!!!0 -

One debt remaining. Home improvement loan.0 -
And another suggestion - as told by fellow MSE friend- don't answer their security questions. a few delaying tactics of going off to look for your date of birth etc. works.0

And yes - I meant THAT!! He in particular - not men in general.0

Great advice. You are not legally required to answer there security questions and they are not allowed to proceed without them as it is againt the data protection act.
I now normally just say to them that I am not willing to discuss financial matters by telephone anymore and please contact me by post and then hang up. No need to be rude.
Seems to annoy the hell out of them but they havent got a leg to stand on.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 297 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts0
