Thanks for the advice, I had a look at whats smoking and its the actual element. Its at the top of my oven and all I can think is that food has splashed up onto it, particularly as my grill is also my oven. Does anyone know how you clean an element please? cant say Ive ever had to do it, should I just open all the windows and let it burn off?0

Hi everyone,
This is my first post on this section, although I lurke all of the time and have picked up some fantastic tips!
My oven is long overdue a good clean. In the past I have used conventional oven cleaners, but dont have any left, and as they're pricey etc I was hoping not to have to get more. I wondered if anyone had any good ideas how to clean an oven without resorting to buying these (aside from a good dose of good old elbow grease).
I may have read somewhere a long time ago that washing detergent is good for the shelves? Not entirely sure....
Anyway, thanks for reading...

Hi,
I use Bar Keepers Friend, it a sort of white powder which I scrub on the shelves with wire wool. I find a sprinkle of this on the side of the sink, then just dab the wire wool into the powder and scrub does very well indeed.
You can buy it from all supermarkets, wilkinsons etc.
You can of course use washing up liquid but that in itself is expensive to use just for that.0 -
I use Brillo pads and good old fashioned elbow grease.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

Obviously not OS but I got one of those Oven Cleaning Blokies in - £35 later and it looked like new! My excuse is that I am pregnant and shouldn't be breathing in all the nasty fumes. Probably doesn't help much!
Previously, when I didn't have the current excuse, I used Astonish paste or Oven Pride.Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re probably right ~ Henry Ford0 -
Only thing i would use is Oven Pride - it is about £4 and is AMAZING! I know you said you didnt want to buy something but you wont regret buying this. The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0

Ive tried dozens of methods - paid for and old style and the oven pride pack with the bag gives the best results of anything I found."Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it may be necessary from time to time to give a stupid or misinformed beholder a black eye" - Miss Piggy0
