I use Dr Power, it's brilliant for all sorts of cleaning, especially greasy stuff!0

hi again all,
If its not bad enough that the fridge broke I now have a very dirty smoking oven that literally makes me choke on fumes after 20 minutes. Ive tried scrubbing, using bicarb, boiling hot water with lemon juice in there and using cleaning products. The bottom is now clean, the sides just wont improve. Im on a budget this month of £30 a week for everything including food for two adults so I cant afford professional cleaners. Any ideas at all please?0 -
a paste of washing soda or bio washing powder left for 24 hours then scrubbed off with vinegar? borrow a friends steam cleaner?
I do feel for you as everything always seems to go wrong at once especially when you are skint.0 -
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

I would have thought normally that the smoke would come from a dirty element, but it depends what sort of oven you have of course.
I've had very dirty ovens before and none of them gave off any smoke or fumes.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
apparently a paste made of caustic soda and wallpaper paste (to stop it running off) should work

My oven is filthy atm but it doesn't give off any fumes at all. I'm hopeless at remembering to clean an oven so it can easily go a year between cleanings, though I do use a flat oven tray on the base to catch most drips and that does get washed regularly in the dishwasher. You must have some problem with the element or burners. Or are you using it at very high temperatures?Val.0

could you have any oven cleaner still in there that you havent fully removed?
The first time I used Mr Muscle I thought I had cleaned it but I hadnt and it absolutely stinked when I put my oven on and took my breath away. I have asthma so OH sorted it out and has been cleaning the oven ever since as I just cant get my breath with the oven cleaner.0 -
when mine got to the grotty stage after 4 years of use and no cleaning ...
... I used a wire brush i bought from the market for 99p and hot soapy water. took a bit of doing, lots of elbow grease, but it came up sparkling! once you've got through the thick layer of burnt on grease, it will come off fairly easily.
good luck, you have my sympathies - my cooker, washing machine, fridge and freezer all conked out this year - spent a small fortune getting decent replacements in the hope that the false economy of having to buy cheapest is now behind me.wading through the treacle of life!
