    Got any biological washing powder?

I second this, or use soda crystals.

Take the shelves off and soak them in the bath with washing powder or soya crystals

Thanks for asking this Rossy, my oven needs a good clean as well. In regard to the soda crystals for the shelves, can these also somehow be used to clean inside the oven and if so, how? I've never used them before and had a quick look on the indexed collections for advice but the thread had expired. I'm aware they can be used for washing clothes as well but have no idea how you go about putting them to good use.

I regularly soak my oven shelves in biological washing powder, makes cleaning them so much easier. Also, a scrumpled up bit of foil is good for getting stubborn bits off.
    Hope is not a strategy.

Yep you can use them on the inside of the oven, either dissolve a scoop in hot water - you can put this in a spray bottle or just dip a cloth/scourer in a bowl.

If your oven is really grimy then make a loose paste rather than a solution (as above) and rub on with a scourer. Leave for 10 mins and then scrub off. Repeat as needed.

I keep an old flat baking tray on the floor of the oven. This and the shelves go in the dishwasher. That only leaves the walls, roof and door. Before I take the shelves out I put a baking dish of boiling water + a squirt of washing up liquid in the oven on the highest setting for 20 minutes. This makes a lot of steam and loosens the grot. Then I stick the same dish of water in the microwave for a few minutes too, all the bits and bobs from both go in the dishwasher, I clean the inside of the oven with the rest of the soapy hot water, a spongy pot scourer and a bit of effort, ditto the microwave, wipe them both out with an old toweling square (ex-nappy, actually!) and that's them done for a coupe of weeks or so. I don't leave the oven for months...it just gets too grotty and then it's hard work to clean it.

I'm not 100% sure - they did seem quite large but I'm not sure they were that large. It might say on the box though - I need to get some myself as our oven is in need of cleaning (again) and I have used these once before - really are the easiest way of cleaning trays.

That said, the bags aren't really anything special, just like large heavy duty zip lock bags - it is possible that you could get something similar from a DIY store - just ensure you get a decent plastic and careful that you seal them in a way that the cleaner isn't going to leak out (I'm thinking folding over and some heavy duty tape?)

An older friend of mine told me that when she lived in Germany they would get a heavy duty bin liner, put the shelves in, take it outside, pour in a bottle of ammonia and leave for as long as possible, turning the bag over every now and again. Then, still outside, cut the bag open, remove the shelves, hose down. Tip ammonia down drain. Take shelves inside and wipe with soapy water :eek::eek:

What a palaver. I'm not sure how they did the inside of the oven? I shudder to think.

Personally I usually use the stinky Mr Muscle stuff but I'm going to give the soda crystals a try.
