  • Maybe a Volkswagen Golf - CL not TDI or GTI and a CL will be cheaper on insurance and they're cheap to buy if you don't mind an older one.
My first car (and still my main car 3 years on) is a 1994 VW Golf CL (1.6l) - I got it for free when I just passed my test, I was 20 at the time and I am a girl too.
Ok so my car was free which obviously your's won't be, but you should be able to get a decent Golf CL of the same sort of age as mine, for under £500. My first years insurance was £1070 fully comp, although as you're 2 years younger I imagine it would cost you more.
Another plus for the Golf is that most of them are incredibly reliable - mine has been in the family since '99 and has never broken down.

A Peugeot 106 is a very good choice - not the most stunning looking vehicle, but generally good, reliable and a low inssurance group. (Also my first car).

it maybe a low insurance group, but for example, i can insure a 2.4L turbo volvo S40 for under £1000 with most insurers i'm 28 male and at the time of quotes 0 NCB.

i cant even look at fiesta's pugs ka's because they all retun a quote back for over £2500.
volvo is a way higher insurance group than the pug but yet cheaper to insure because its not your typical choice for a young driver.

    hello op

i have bought myself a clio 2001 1.2 16 v when i was 16 i learnt to drive in it and took my test in it the car was very reliable and i loved her she was called katie. the experience i got from renaults is they are very good car and still look 'cool'. they do have common faults such as light bulbs are tricky to get to but renault has a massive forum with loads of suggestions. i think i paid £1100 for my first years insurence.

any way moving on to cars on finance

i have just got myself a beautiful mini convertable brand new from a dealers on finance the car is my baby what i like about finance is you have a set amount that you know you are going to pay and the repairs are free for x amount of time of course there are exceptions like you crashing it or cosmectic problems

someone said about wrighting off a car on finance if you get gap insurence they will pay the difference and put you back to the invoice price

Finance and running costs will be expensive. If you have a bump can you afford the hundreds of pounds excess to get your car repaired as well as keep up with the payments.

  • You might want to work out what the insurance will be on any car you are looking at. If you look through autotrader or ebay you will often be able to see the numberplate and you can plug this into the insurance websites to get quotes.

I've recently insured my 17yo son to drive his little fiat siecento (not the coolest car on the planet - but he loves it) and it was £3000 with a box fitted through Co-op young drivers scheme rather then £5000+ through sites like compare the market.

Once you've looked at a few cars from the insurance point of view for a newly qualified driver rather then a learner it might influence your choice of car.

He bought his car about 6 weeks before his test and practised driving round in it and I'm sure it helped him get through his test and afterwards as well. I took out learner driver insurance through Collingwood and you can get it for just a month.

Good luck in your driving test.

Personally, I would avoid a Micra

The pre-2003 model Micras were robust and reliable; there are still thousands of them around providing cheap and cheerful motoring for new drivers.

    Hello,

I am looking for advice on buying my first car. I have my test booked for first week in march. I am 18.

I have a budget of £1000, and around £2000 for insurance - which I want fully comp - my mom has offered to go on the policy (she has been driving for 20 years) as a named driver but says I should I have my own policy to build up my NCD.

I've been looking at 1.0 Nissan Micras, and the same with Peagout 106's, but I have no idea what I am looking at and the best way to find insurance!
I've looked into the Ikube tracker device thing, but it really wouldnt be suitable.

The other idea I had was to put a deposit on a new car, and pay on finance?

Im based in Walsall, which is just out of Birmingham, so if anyone knows any dealers in the area with a good reputation, recomendations would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Don't know any dealers sorry. But I have friends with Micras and they are very happy with them.
Don't grow up. Its a trap!

    Peace, love and labradors!

Really? My OH is 26, has 5 years no claims and still can't insure an S40 for less than £1000! :(
