Hello,
I am looking for advice on buying my first car. I have my test booked for first week in march. I am 18.
I have a budget of £1000, and around £2000 for insurance - which I want fully comp - my mom has offered to go on the policy (she has been driving for 20 years) as a named driver but says I should I have my own policy to build up my NCD.
I've been looking at 1.0 Nissan Micras, and the same with Peagout 106's, but I have no idea what I am looking at and the best way to find insurance!
I've looked into the Ikube tracker device thing, but it really wouldnt be suitable.
The other idea I had was to put a deposit on a new car, and pay on finance?
Im based in Walsall, which is just out of Birmingham, so if anyone knows any dealers in the area with a good reputation, recomendations would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Are you male or female? I ask as lads won't touch a Ka or Micra whereas girls don't seem to mind them.
Personally, I would avoid a Micra or anything Renault.
Think Corsa, Fiesta, 106, Ka with 1.0 or 1.2 engines, or Focus/Astra 1.4."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -
Im a female
I looked at a KA and the insurance was over £3000!!!

Walsall is a very high area for car insurance, I'm sure. If you can insure in a less expensive area, it would be worth it. Are you at Uni or work away?"There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0

The Renault will be cheaper, have a little more street cred, and inspite of what most, inc papa thinks, be more reliable.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
No, I work in the local area
don't even have relatives away from here.
Cars are a confusing and expensive business, by renault are you refering to the clio?
Is getting a new car on finance a bad thing? something like a 207?0 -
if you purchase your own insurance with you as MAIN driver policy holder with mum as named driver you would earn you own NCB.
do it the other way round and its call fronting and you would have a hell of a job claiming off your insurers once they find out and or discover youve defrauded them in the event of a claim or reported.
i'm all up for giving advice about the cars you should look at and poppasmurf has touched on some cars i would have agree'd to in the recent past for a first timer, not so much now these days because insurers do not care for the cars group rating 1-50 small cars being genrally 1-8 the insurers have become wise to make and model of car the young driver goes for so the micra 106 fiesta ka all carry a higher insurance premium because their the most common cars on the road used by under 25's and most commonly accident statistics.
for your first car i would suggest not touching finance, if you write it off you wont have a car but the finance to pay off!
my suggestion would be to think out of the box from the normal everyday small run around.
rover 220sd, avoid petrol.
pug 306 1.4 1.6
mazda 323s.
toyota starlet 1.3ils.
then go bigger volvo BMW
you maybe suprised how cheap some larger family type cars come back in insurance quotes.
look on autotrader get reg numbers to specific makr and models and run them past insurance sites, go toones that are NOT on the comparisson sites and go the sites with the cheapest quote on comparisson sites and rerun the quote.
full comp is usually cheaper than third party or thirdparty fire and theft.0 -

yip 2003 1.5 dci megane. reliable little diesel car not much go wrong other than interior parts.
would avoid a clio purely based on it being a common car for young drivers under 25. like i said.0 -
Please don't buy a new car at your age on finance.
I assume you actually mean a new car???
Point 1, you will prang it,, that will put up your allready inflated ins, and will deflate your ego,
2ndly, avoid finace as you would the wicked witch, it is trully giving money away.
Save a little ande save allot.
(PS hope that doesn't sound condescending, it was simply a lesson imparted to me,;))I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Hi i have just bought a ford fiesta Lx and radio is blocked, the serial number is M117671. i was given code 1803 but this doesn't seem to work. can anyone help?!0

Just use insurance comparison sites to see what's cheapest for you. Use a wide range of cars as atrix says. I would add about the rover though - as he says the 25/220 diesels are great, you can also tune them to make them very fast indeed.
But a petrol should be ok if AND ONLY IF the head gasket has been replaced with the strengthened MLS one, and there is documented evidence of this. I drive a 25 1.4, the HG was done shortly before I bought it and its fine.
Another suggestion is a Hyundai accent (my previous, and first car).0
