Completely OT....but can I pick your brains about an IPad HC.
I know they are just for internet rather than using as a WP etc. but what exactly does it do and what sort of apps are there that someone like me would find useful? Also are they all free or do the better ones cost a small fortune?
What size screen does it have and are they easy to use?
I'm thinking of treating myself to one rather than an IPhone as I don't really leave the house that much (I know...very sad!!) but just wondered if it's something I'd like or whether they are a bit faddy. I'm fine with my lappie but I'm not a real techie personHappyChappy84 wrote: »An iPad can do more than just go on the internet. If you purchase the relevant apps you can do spreadsheets and word processing quite easily. I do spreadsheets on mine as I like to keep a note of what I spend, when, and where, especially when abroad. Then when my credit card statement comes in I can tick them all off and throw the receipts in the recycling. You can even print these off if you have a compatible printer.
You name it, there is an app for it from cooking apps, to games to finance tracking to trip logging. You can even use it to read books like you can on the Amazon Kindle. Most major newspapers and magazine have apps so you can download your mag/newspaper subscription (new issues download overnight whilst you sleep).
If you want internet on the go then opt for a 3G one that way you can download things when you're out and about, or even read the MSE thread on the way to T's.
The screen is 9.7 inch (remember that's measured diagonally) and is the perfect size IMO. They are incredibly easy to use.
What you won't be able to do is watch video on some websites but there are BBC iPlayer, Demand 5, 4OD and the ITV player apps which will allow you to catch up on your programmes.

There is also a Kindle app for the iPad which allows you to purchase books from Amazon if they are cheaper there. Plus don't Amazon have a load of self publishers on Amazon which means hundreds of free books.
The iPad 3 is rumoured to be due in a couple of months and the iPad 2 will drop slightly in price.
Buy it from T's and get the CC points. If you can, try going through Quidco too to get a bit extra cash back. This is the only way you will get it cheaper as it doesn't matter where you go on the high street (T's, Currys, Carphone Warehouse, Apple Store) the prices will be much of a muchness as apple are strict on pricing.
What might be worth looking in to is apples reconditioned units. Cheaper than new but that way you know they have been fully inspected by them.
Thanks HC, I had a play on an iPad in T's the other day and got really seduced by all the touchscreen-ness, I almost bought one but stopped myself!
Does 3G work like mobile internet i.e. I can get the internet on my phone wherever but can't on my basic kindle.
Do you know also, if you can download books onto the iPad if you've already downloaded them onto your kindle via amazon?

I KNEW you were a big softie really
Amazingly, although I only have a small car, so far it's managed to handle snowy driving ok, just keep it slow, steady and in a low gear and steer gently.
It always amazes me how many of the cars I see in trouble are [STRIKE]quite [/STRIKE]very expensive BMWs and Audi's etc, rear wheel drive is all very well when you're zooming up a motorway but useless in the snow - give me my little car anyday.
Anyone going out in this weather (rescusing stranded DS etc) please take care and drive carefully, and watch out for idiots who aren't, they're more dangerous than the snow xx
ps dear mr T gods...please no glitches tomorrow unless the roads have cleared :A
No I'm not!:p
You need to be in as high a gear as possible, that way when you need to apply the power there is less chance of wheel spin.
BMW's, in fact any rear wheel drive car are useless in the snow and ice.0 -

I can't believe the gall of her!
For regular updates on deals in high street shops, visit hotukd.eals.com and moneysavingexpert.com. Check for deals as often as you can - over breakfast, during your lunchhour, in the evenings when you ought to be relaxing.
And who provides all the glitches and deals that she uses? Other people, that's who!!
It was easy to see that she is one of the lurkers who read what we post and use for themselves, never sharing with us their deals! She and her son signed up to answer back to the slating she got here when she was first on tv, and it was plain that she had never signed up before. Take, but not share! Grr. Don't these spongers realise that the site would be nothing if people didn't share!

i was shocked when she admited to printing off blua dragon coupons......thought you could only have 1 ? well unless you change amount of comp but alot of things struck me as abit odd to admit to a newspaper when they say who you are etc ! x0 -

Yep, 3G works just like internet on mobile phones do. Apple and the networks will tell you that you have to sign up to a dedicated iPad data plan but when I had my 3G iPad 2 I popped my iPhone 4 SIM in to the iPad and entered the same data username and password in the iPad settings and it worked. I returned the iPad and got a less expensive WiFi only model as I couldn't justify the extra £100 for the 3G that I would rarely use. I never got a chance to fully test the 3G so I don't know if the networks would have any way of telling what I'd done and end up with them restricting my account, or worse, getting a huge bill for the excessive data use.
I've no idea about downloading your kindle books but there is a Kindle app for iPad. You would have to sign in and see if Amazon will let you re-download your books to another device for free.0 -

HappyChappy84 wrote: »That's an old article though. 1st of December if I remember correctly so not too long after the programme aired.
Is it really only that long ago? It seems like much longer since the program was on (must be getting old eh?). I've not read the article before, just followed the link, which I assumed was new. I think I was just so surprised at how blatant she was about pricecheck dtd and wombling and well, having read it again she comes across as a bit dodgy which is fine by me.
Phrases like "I don't think its illegal" and the way she was deliberately vague in her complaint to heinz. Hopefully this will put some people off. But I suppose I was most concerned with the way that her use of coupons during bogofs and multibuys was highlighted (giving her a reduction on the rest of the shopping,) which has only drawn it more to the attention of the supermarkets.
BUT I suppose a good point is that since the show/article was published I've not seen any real difference when using coupons and vouchers (can only speak for myself) - Tesco are still mostly incompetent, often a law unto themselves, but no change there then. Morrisons have always scrutinised them, and I rarely shop at Asda so can't comment.
Maybe T, A et al are not so scared of us after all.:T
