how do they decide what rate you get on D L A ?
Hi there, my hubby gets high rate for mobility and middle rate for care and they way he was assesd for those was letters from the gp stating what he felt my husband was and was not able to do for himself and how far he could walk without having to stop because of pain. He was also examined by doctors acting for the benefits agency and last but not least he had to agree to his hospital records being released so the staff at the medical claims dept could get the whole picture. He was awarded the high rate for mobility as he cannot walk without pain and cannot stand in one place for pain.
The middle for care is because he can still feed himself etc. He is unable to up buttons etc. Hope this helps Jacqui

Hi again, I am female , I retired from my job due to ill-health (my job was very physical) and my company paid SSP for 6mths and then I claimed IB about 8mths ago. I will be 59 in July.... my company pension is due to start next month and I do realise that it may affect my IB..

Although I have taken Ill-health retirement I had hoped to get some part-time work that I could manage , but no luck so far although I am still applying for jobs.

Thankyou for taking the trouble to find this out for me..

No problem if you need to ask more info.....

You have to reapply to get a different rate but, they can also take away what you are already getting. That is what they told us when my husband was going to try to get his care side increased from the middle rate and they did say that just because you are getting it now when the claim, for new level goes in there is no guarantee of getting any of it back again. We decided to stick with what we have now. Jacqui
  • Frosty, perhaps you could cast some light on a couple of questions that i have been unable to receive positive answers to,although i have contacts in the dwp,in quite senior positions.

I have also approached several welfare rights advisors on other sites with the same result.

Firstly three people i know, who have been on ib since it was invalidity benefit and had pca and medicals when they were first introduced in 1995,one who is now 62 years old has never heard anything since, although he is not excempt..The second who is now 56,had two medicals, one in 1995,one in 1997,then heard nothing until this year when he was sent an ib50 and went for a medical ,then received notification his next review will be in 3 years time.the third had a medical in 1995,an ib50 but no medical in 1997,then again an ib50 this year, and no medical, his next review is in either 3 or 5 years, not sure,he is about 52.

Sorry this is so long winded!!but all these people are in the same area,so why the differences and does age at any time become an issue as i have heard of people being given review dates after they will have retired!!!And when the pca was introduced;people over 58 were not expected to take part.

Lastly,if you have read this far!! all these people scored well over the points required, based on the pca points system given on many places on the net.

Just for the record I AM NOT one of these people, having worked none stop for 35 years!! Though i do have an interest in the subject as do the people involved, so would welcome any info.you can give me,Thanks Janet.

..Frosty Box, I sent you a PM, but you haven't replied?

Don't think it's wise to discuss it here, but can you clarify if I'm right?
  • Sorry everyone

I was just trying to be helpful, but got screwed over. (I thought Martins message was for us all to be nice to one another?!?) Even though I don't work for a certain department now, I allegedly have to respect a "EMP" thats nothing to do with me now!

If I were in all your shoes and on some subjects I am, I would so appreciate it if someone could give me the advice, honesty and support that I so desperately need. So with my hand on my heart, I'm sorry I can't give you any more adivce on this. Ask at your local offices for an IB1, it'll tell you everything I have anyway.

  • Sorry you won't be able to help any more, but thanks for all you've done. There was a guy on here a few months back who was very helpful and he suddenly disappeared too.....

    What's an EMP?
