I woke up yesterday morning with those names and Ladies of Letters in my head Candlelight ! Funny how the memory works if you let things lie for a few hours .
I went online to look at the dvds of the 2 series and they have to be joking looking at the prices . I don't know if you watched it but it really made me laugh . I don't go in much for comedy but the contrast between the two characters was brilliant .The antics of Anne Reids character defied belief .
Has anyone been watching Peter Kay's Car Share ? I know he's like marmite , either love or hate him . I loved his stand up shows but never got inte Pheonix Nights .
The first car share series was very good and the new one even better . A lesson in how not to react to a cyclist banging a bottle of water onto your car roof while he's taking a rest . Only two more episodes as he's said there wont be a third sadly . The combination of laugh out loud comedy and moments of pathos works well .

  • It is funny Polly how you almost think of it when you are asleep. Yes I really enjoyed it, but I haven't watched Peter Kay, just seen the trailors.

We are not as daft as we think we are, our brains are still working when we are asleep :):)

The brain is just amazing how it can produce stuff from years ago when left to sort it .
I first listened to the Woman's Hour Ladies of Letters with Patricia Routledge and erm I forget , I know Anne Reid joined towards the end of the radio series but yet again I can't remember the other actress with Patricia Routledge , I know she was well known but once again the old grey cells are struggling .
It's worth watching car share if you can get past some of the bad language , it sort off washes over me . I don't like swearing but seem to be able not to focus on it .

Prunella Scales . That spelling looks bit dodgy but hopefully correct .

I was introduced to Pheonix Nights when I first got with DH. Real hearty belly laughs from us but we were brought up in the workingman's club culture so 'get it' that bit more probably. I do love PK, his talent, his observational stand up shows and yeah, Car Share. It's subtle in places but sparks of genius are there. Comedy shows are few and far between at the moment. I don't watch much TV (as it's normally hogged by docu mad DH while I'm one ear, one eye in as I'm crocheting etc) but my staple is still Gold, normally only fools and horses.

DH is fishing till 2 while I do all the washing and drying thats standing as I don't know how long i'll be washing machine-less either. I've moved house umpteen times but this is another level entirely

The allotments out the back are bustling this morning. There's frost afoot. In the bathroom this morning I heard my neighbour in his shed talking about protection for his tomatoes. There's a love there that I cannot wait to get involved in.

The girls are heading to MIL's this afternoon and staying till tomorrow evening where we'll pick them up and enjoy an Easter dinner by MIL. Tuesday evening we're off to Ikea for Ingolf bar stools and our tea :) I have dried fruit, jelly pots, malt loaf, popcorn, fruit tea and Lidl tuna salad/rice tins so we can have snacks and lunches... and yeah, there's the chippy!
  • Morning! Happy Easter everyone!!!

We have a lovely spring day here so did a boot fair where I found a pair of blue childs crocks size 9 for the Zebra, a River Island trilby style sun hat for the Zebra in dark blue fabric with grey green leaves on and a pair of size 5 childs wellies that are racing cars with headlights for the Oreo child. Also struck lucky for me in the form of a small 30s square heavy saucepan and lid just the right size to fit the cooking shelf on the woodstove for £1.

We decided to go to Lee on the Solent for a walk along the beach there and as we got out of the car a spitfire plane took off from Daedalus Airfield just behind the beach and came over our heads at about 200 feet, queue much shouting pointing and jumping up and down not just from me but from lots of other folks walking past, she was BEAUTIFUL! A twin cockpit jobbie and we saw her fly in and out quite a few times, just going across to the Isle of Wight and turning back to the airfield so perhaps they were giving trips today but we were so very lucky to see her!

I do love spitfires, we live a few roads away from a WW2 memorial that was a spitfire base. During the spring and summer we have at least 4 fly bys a day, normally with an accompanying helicopter for those who want to take photos. i still rush outside each time to see them.

  • It's the engine noise that does it for me, I knew what it was before I looked up and it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up NOT in fright but with delight. Aren't they just wonderful planes? and to have them still flying today in 2017 is just amazing so huge and heartfelt thanks to those totally dedicated folks who love them enough to do so!

Lyn You are so lucky with the boot sales , scout jumbles etc . None of those exist here . There are a few charity shops only two are not the chugging charities so our local hospice and Sue Ryder are the only ones we go to .
I love the Spitfires .They are such a joy to watch and the memory of the hopes of a nation that went with those very young men in their flimsy crafts is one that endures today .
On the subject of planes I have just finished a paperback - I know books again , I always have a smaller book on the go as an antidote to whatever often complex non-fiction I'm plodding through .
It's the story of six sisters evacuated with their mother from London to the Sussex countryside in 1939 . Taken from the oldest sisters account and the memories of her siblings . The writer is the son of one of the younger sisters . Something I wasn't aware of until reading it was that RAF pilots developed a knack of tipping their wings under the wings of the V1 and V2 rockets , the "doodlebugs " that flew in over the south on their way to attack London ..
They would steer them away from villages , schools etc and pull away over fields where the rocket would fall and explode .
Warning I've just begun another true account spanning the period 1931-81. Set in the very deprived area around the Liverpool docks it charts the depression , WW2 and life into the eighties . At the time of publication Maggie whose account it is was ninety six years old and when the writer who helped her bring her story into print rang Maggies daughter in 2015 , Maggie was cooking sausages and chips in the background .

I hope you got all the washing dry Fuds .Sending the vibes that all will go smoothly .

Pretty dank, windy and wet here today . Never mind tomorrow may be better .

    Take care all

I may have told you this story before but make no apology. It's what happens when senility is on the horizon.

My mother was pushing me in my pushchair over a bridge in Southampton. She stopped to admire some approaching aircraft, thinking proudly of 'our boys' bravely flying off to protect us.
Suddenly, to her horror she realised that they weren't 'our boys' at all and, in fact. bombs were falling into the river as they approached us.

To her dying day she maintained that there should be an Olympic Gold Medal for the speed of running, pushing a pushchair while trying to beat planes dropping bombs. She thinks that she set an unbeatable record that day.

Everyone loved Spitfires and I remember housewives donating precious saucepan and fireguards to provide the metal for them when the factories that built them started to run out.
