It took me a while to drop off Lyn but I slept through thank goodness.

We went back for another look this morning. The EA agreed to it because of the pressure I had put on DH to commit. The tables have now turned and I have released an excitable monster. I was able to look at it in a 'my home' frame of mind. It's lush ladies. The original doors are still in place upstairs with a really old embossed turning knob. Unfortunatly they are wick with gloss paint. We're hoping to strip them and restore.

The bad news is that the EA has bigged up gas stoves to DH and he's now very keen. I am worried I have to say. I get my little old way an awful lot but he's not seeming tobudge on the cleanliness/ease idea compared to my wood store/physical work/dirt but i'm hoping to explain to him what it means for me in terms of control and security. Doh!

colcannon topped cottage pie just out of the oven and I have to say that fat free yoghurt in mashed potato is alright! I'm used to milk and butter so I am shocked I actually liked it.

It was bitter here too Lyn. Nice though :)

Last bit of news is I don't have pernicious anaemia. The blood tests came back normal so I called the consultant secretary who had him call me back. He apologised as he thinks he's looked at a different blood result further up the page. Thank goodness the GPs were on the ball!

So no diagnosis for my boughts of P - I'm just fat, unfit and stressed. Soon to change!
  • Fuda I don't know if you've mentioned to oh the fact that gas supplies can be turned off at any time - especially when foreign suppliers are involved . The comfort of a fuel source already stocked up is priceless , as is cooking , airing laundry etc .
Glad the bloods are sorted , looking at the slope your house is on , you'll be fitter than all of us put together .
    polly x
It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

There but for fortune go you and I.

Fuds, we use olive or rapeseed oil in mash, and tbh often have parsnip or carrot (or mixed) mash, especially if we're low-carving.

  • FUDDLE the estate agent isn't going to live in the house YOU ARE so I'd have a small word with the EA and tell them you intend to install a multi fuel stove because it's what YOU want!!! I still think the best thing about stoves is being able to pay for your fuel before you use it and know you will be warm without a whacking big bill to pay at the end of the season. Our stove isn't messy indoors, I clear the ash pan every day and brush out the grate and then vacuum the hearth and the inside bits of the stove that are ashy and we don't suffer with an excess of dust, you just have to be on top of it and do the routine clean every day (which you do anyway) and the house stays clean. Ease? well I lay up the fire in the morning after I've cleaned it, He Who Knows takes the log basket out and fills it and that's all there is to it, easy as pie, you've wanted your stove for as long as I've known you love, don't let go of the dream.....GET THE STOVE!!! xxx.
  • Just a thought FUDS is the gas already 'in' the inglenook? as in is the gas carrying pipe there and ready to fit a fire to it? if not the installation might mean taking up floors to get it there and if the cottage has just been decorated/improved it would be very disruptive. Fitting a wood stove doesn't involve an external power source, it does involve having the chimney lined but it is independent of gas or electricity and won't involve floors taken up or cosmetic damage to the house.

We had a gas stove in our last house and we moved here a year ago and have a log burning stove. There is absolutely no comparison. Yes the gas stove is instant flames and takes no tending (that takes all of the fun out of it) but it took ages for the stove to warm up and give out heat. I love my wood burning stove, it looks gorgeous, takes no cleaning, I leave a good bed of ash and empty the ash pan once a week and my husband has gone into caveman mode keeps it well stocked with wood. I don't have a free source of wood, so we buy our logs in, not cheap, but worth every penny. Our house is so cosy and warm, do it, you won't be disappointed, neither will your husband.

Thank you. We've decided not to decide. We're coming from completely different angles and both with valid reasoning. We haven't even got the house yet so it can wait. :)
  • Morning all,

Just my twopennth worth - living in a house with no gas, no wood burner, no heat pump, no radiators - I would have a wood burner in a heartbeat. Unfortunately we can't put one in because of how our house is designed, but when we move, it's high on the list of wants.

Deciding not to decide is also very sensible I think.

    Much love xxx

I would agree with this decision! If you need some extra heat while you decide B&Q sell a small convector heater for £20 which heats up a room really quickly.

You could decorate the fireplace area with candles and greenery/flowers meantime.
Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama ;)

Fuds I have found through experience that once a seed has been planted and left unmentioned, DH often comes around to my way of thinking as if it was his idea ;)

Will you have a garden, or is it a yard?
